The shortage is turning into a desert

Went to a local AD yesterday just hoping to try on a DJ41 to gauge the size.

2 giant display cases and it was 80% empty. Not a single watch above 36mm in size in the case and all ladies watches expect for 1 Cellini.

Told the guy I was hoping to try on a DJ41 either SS or a PM piece. He said they have nothing unfortunately. He also said they have only seen 2 new subs all year. He offered to put me on the list for a few pieces but I declined.

I said it is sad to see the cases so barren this time of year and he admitted it is embarrassing that it has come to this.

So I looked at the Omega case and that was full and I was smitten with the new Omega Seamaster Titanium. May end up diverting my Rolex funds that way

This is not a rant, just an update on the state of affairs

Same in this part of the world, just got news my favourite AD is actually dropping Rolex now due to the shortage in supply. There are 2 stores in the city owned by the same parent company, they don't want 2 empty cases just one I guess lol

This Rolex nonsense must be a significant benefit to brands like Omega, Blancpain, Panerai and others. I doubt we represent the larger watch buying world, most aren’t willing to wait 12, 24 months to get a watch, they’ll buy what’s in stock... and that isn’t Rolex.

Meanwhile, you can find multiples of the exact Rolex you want sitting in the case of your local grey market dealer.

Wow, but I can understand. The SA basically apologized to me. Then while we were in the Omega section I heard another SA apologizing to another customer at the Rolex case that they had no Oyster Perpetuals to show him

All the SAs can do is apologize to customers and offer to add them to lists

This supports the statement my AD said to me a few weeks ago, they were struggling to get anything from Rolex other than the new Submariners, their usual staple sale is the DJ but they hadn't seen one in a while and were having to take details of those people looking for a DJ36 & 41, something they had never had to before as they had usually been able to find buyers the DJ they wanted from within the group.

Strange times indeed.

Plenty of Rolex in stores where I am in Asia. May be not the ones I’d want Santa to bring me. Also queues outside the Rolex stores and SA’s look content with state of affairs.

So, where in NC are you? I'm guessing it was a Fink's since it's the only store I can think of that carries both Rolex and Omega.

I've gone over to Omega myself, with a lovely blue Seamaster and a Speedmaster Sandwich. I think I prefer the Speedy, but I can't get over how pretty the Seamaster is, and every time I sell one I end up buying it back again. So now I'm trying to just stay happy where I am.

That titanium Seamaster is a great watch by the way. I have the SS version and love it. Maybe @1William will chime in to post his. Great looking watch for sure

Yes, it is a very sad state of affairs but as others have said - simple supply and demand. Supply was limited in the spring and summer coupled with individuals having extra funds they would have used on travel diverted to luxury goods. As soon as watches hit the stores, people bought and now we are seeing the results which are empty display boxes and waiting lists on almost everything.

After waiting for the Hulk for 1 year, I decided to buy the Omega Diver Seamaster 300M in blue. I've always liked it since it appeared in GoldenEye.

I think padi56 is right. It's no longer about folks buying Rolex's to wear and enjoy them. It's all about flipping, so this has caused a run / demand spike as folks buy them and sit on them or sell to a gray market dealer.

Nothing we can do. It's all supply/demand.

omega

can get a seamaster 300 and a speedmaster for less than the price of a sub, if you go gray. It is a great duo. Nothing wrong with it.

Hopefully it will change from a money game back to a hobby as people slowly move on to other brands. Unfortunately I think Rolex is too smart to let that go to far. Every time they discontinue a model like the hulk it whips all the flippers back up into a frenzy. Then everyone wants the next watch to double overnight.

I went in opposite direction kind of. I went omega or tried to back in 18 after getting rudely treated at a couple of ADs.

I went to Omega boutique directly across the way from the Rolex AD after a snubbing. Looked at the seamaster was going to buy it but decided to check online and saw it for 2500.00 less. I told the SR what’s with this and can you match price. No was the answer. Then she said buy the Taratullum. It’s LE and there’s only one in store for 13K. Found that online for 2K less at this point she was pretty embarrassed and said I’ll get you on too of list for the 50th Apollo 11 if you put 5K deposit down. So I did that in November of 18!

One yr later and 4 months after the moon landing anniversary still no watch so I cancelled and got my money back. The very next day my AD that I developed a wonderful relationship over that 1 year time span called about a hulk.

The rest is history.

Unfortunately this is the world of Rolex right now.

For some reason I still love the brand and keep going back - if I want something bad enough I go Grey and bite the bullet.

This seems very intentional by Rolex. The local ADs, jewelry stores, are getting little to no inventory. All the inventory is going to the Rolex boutiques. It would appear Rolex is moving up the market and that’s what you do. Imagine if Louis Vuitton was sold in a local jewelry store, not the experience they are going for.

Some cities are doomed, others are like too good to be true. Glad I belong in the second group

Empty cases everywhere yet there’s a trusted seller with colored dial OP 41s for $11,600 to $12,600......OPs!
If people are paying anywhere close to that I just don’t know what to say.....
