When it rains, it pours... An unexpected incoming!

Recently I posted about my search for the red sub and my acquisition of a great mk IV example. I happened upon another opportunity and just received a full set with box, double punched papers, and accessories mk II Red Sub. I purchased it from the original owner whose name is on the paperwork. It has never been serviced (but is in need of one). Really excited to add this to my vintage pieces.

Thanks, I'll have it serviced but not polished. May need to have the tritium on the hands stabilized. I see a little cracking.

Nice find, enjoy! Also illustrates perfectly how the crown-guards were sometimes uneven, from the factory. Often you see this on examples which have been serviced and polished, and people assume it's a bad polish job which made the CGs uneven. As you say, this is directly from the original owner and has not been serviced/polished.

True. It also exemplifies that hands and dial can age differently.

Congrats!

Did it come with the original bezel insert? It's sporting a later one in the pics.

That's the only bezel insert I received. The original owner (not a watch collector) said that's exactly how he received it at time of purchase.

When did he claim he purchased it? Rolex didn't start offering that particular style of bezel insert until many years later........

That bezel insert isn't original to that Sub, unfortunately.

Interesting. I'm going to inquire again and ask specifically about if the bezel insert has ever been changed. Can you show me a pic of yours?

Here's mine with a MK2 "long 5" insert. The seller I acquired it from didn't make any declarations as to whether it was original to the Sub or not. Most any Sub from the 70s (red or white) would sport a MK3 insert, if original. Your insert that has the "flat 4" came along much later.

Another thing I'd point out is that your case shows a good amount of wear, in terms of scratches and nicks. Yet the insert looks more new than beat up. How likely is that to actually happen?

Good point about the wear. Glad to have knowledgeable forum members to catch this stuff.

If this is a Q&A about authenticity then let me throw my hat into the ring..

Any chance to see the other side of that hang tag with the serial number on it?
Feel free to block out the last couple of numbers..

Curious..

Didn't intend for this to be a Q&A but open to feedback. The green tag is pretty faded but you can make out the numbers.
