5170 new or used

would you buy new from AD for a $10-12k premium over prevailing mint, papers, box,... used pricing?

Depends on whether buying from AD opens doors for other things you might want in the future (e.g. access to Nautilus or Aquanaut waitlists etc.)

The 5170 is cool but ADs can’t give them away. I would only buy if it is bundled like Jorge said with a sport watch and both are in stock not with some promise that after you buy the 5170 they will take care of You.

What’s your propensity to flip? If you won’t keep forever, then used. But as mentioned by others, a bundle with a Naut or Aqua is the best option of all.

I love the idea of asking for a bundle but ...

Is it realistic to expect the 5170 under MSRP and to ask for access to a 5711? I assumed no.

I'd go new and ask for a discount.

My answer would be no.

At $80,000 msrp, this reference is already overpriced.

Patek lowered the MSRP on the new 5172 to $73,000.

Look on this forum how long it takes a TS to sell a 5170G and you’ll see that even at $50,000 used, mint, under warranty, it’s still quite high.

If you try to sell to a TS for any reason, you’ll get offers around 40-45 depending on dial color.

So if you pay $65,000 plus tax and you trade or sell later for any reason, expect at least a 20,000 loss.

If you’re interested I may be willing to let my white dial 5170G go for 45K. It’s an amazing piece but just doesn’t get a lot of wrist time, mostly because my wife doesn’t know I bought it :)

Having owned a 5170, I would pass and look into the 5172.

Which dial is slower to move? I like the black one, but if it's anything like my Lange legibility is very very poor.

Are they AR coated on any side? My Lange is pre AR, that probably doesn't help.

The white dial is a bit slower to move.

Legibility on the black dial is not that great.
