How much dust under the crystal is acceptable?
Hi, everyone, I just got my new 5513 back from a crystal change at an independent watchmaker and noticed there are a few specks of dust under the crystal. Indoors, with the naked eye, I can only count maybe 3 specks. Outdoors, in direct sunlight, a few more become visible but it is by no means a huge quantity. My question is, is it unreasonable to expect no dust whatsoever? How much dust is considered normal and how much is considered excessive? Thank you for the replies!

None. I had RSC in Dallas remove one speck I found in my brand new GMT. They had it done in less than 24 hours after I brought the unit in. Thanks to my ADs connections. Otherwise I assume it takes week or two.

I usually don't get too uptight about some of these types of minute details (bezel alignment, scratches, hands lining up, what time the date changes, etc.).
But there should be NO dust on the dial. Uncool.

Take it back! Or if you're comfortable you can just do it yourself.

Dust under the dial drives me CRAZY. I brought back a DD 3 times to a watchmaker. The third time was the charm. :)

I have Absolutely ZERO tolerance for any specks on the dial. My lovely 1675 had a very small "floater" that would be in a different place every time I looked at the dial. I sent it off primarily to get this fixed and had a couple of other service items handled. I am so much happier with a clean dial.

The only "dust" that should be present under the crystal of a 5513, is the rare
bit of Tritium that flakes off the dial. Even that drives me nuts! |

Like many other responses, my answer is zero. I'd take it back until no visible signs of dust remain

Thanks for the replies guys. So I took it back today, and the people at the store were very kind and had it cleaned up in 15 minutes. However, if I look closely, there still is one tiny tiny speck left. Its small enough that its practically invisible if one is more than 8 inches away. Do I just deal with it, or should I take it back again?

Take it back! You paid good money and shouldn't have to live with that.
I'm sympathetic, as it's hard for independent watch makers to have a dust free controlled lab like they work with at the major brand service centers. This just means they should spend more time assuring there's no dust on the dial prior to sealing it up, not that their customers should have to live with it. |
