To settle or not?
I took a break from my Rolex hobby for several years and when I got the itch to dive back in, I couldn't believe the state of the Rolex market. Since then, I put myself on the list at my local AD for a Sub Date as well as a BLNR. Today I received "the call" for a 114060 (Sub/Non-Date). It's not on the top of my list as I prefer the date version, but that being said...would I be crazy to pass on this watch? I'm extremely appreciative for the opportunity. I know the list of people they can offer this watch to is rather long. Just don't want to feel like I'm settling.

If you're going to feel like you're settling, give it a miss.

Hard pass if you feel like you are settling. A sub date shouldn’t take that much longer. That said, I prefer the classic sub.

If you want the date I’d wait...agree it shouldn’t take long to get it.

FOMO is real. But you can buy it knowing that if/when you purchase a date you can sell this one with minimal loss if any.

Wait for what you want. Don't settle.

I did the opposite, passed on a date Sub for the Submariner. I think here is a case where the word ‘settle’ applies as you’ll regret not having the date rather than being simply flexible with what is available.

Express your interest in the date version an ask the SA you're working with how long it might be until one of those comes in.
In this case for the sub, I'd wait if I was you. If it was a Daytona like in another recent thread, that would be a much harder decision. Good luck! |

Why buy a ND when you want a date? You might need a longer break.

Same. I passed up a 116610 in favor of 114060. Having the 5-digit 16610 Sub prior, I knew the Date wasn't going to be missed.

Wait for what you want. The whole notion of settling will linger and will tarnish the purchase for you if you move forward.
You won't lose any credibility with the AD as a serious buyer since the Sub Date is what you voiced interest in. Hopefully the wait for that one isn't much longer. |

"Settle?"
euh . . . would you "settle" for getting a wife you did not really care for?

This Rolex craze is really getting into people’s heads... why in the world would you pay thousands of dollars to settle for something you don’t really want (a watch)? Don’t settle, just wait you get what you wish for

Get what you want. Otherwise regret will erode your resolve.

Usually I'd say don't settle, but that is in a fair and reasonable market which this sure ain't no more so just go with what feels right at the time, best to have no set rules nowadays.

Don't settle.
I've always disagreed with some people's opinions of; Buy this precious metal watch to let an AD know you're seriosu then they'll get you watches you want. That may be true of some AD's but I would never do business with them. Besides, why spend so much cash on crap you don't want? Wait for the watch you really want. Not only do you save cash and hassle, the AD knows you really are just after watches you want, you're not a flipper or a cow to be milked dry! Best of luck for finding and buying your Submariner Date, hope it arrives soon. :) |

Every time I have "settled" on something I have regretted it.
Every. Time.

You could wear the nd until the one you wanted arrived and probably sell it for minimal loss but I wouldn't want that kind of hassle. Like others have said, wait for what you want. After all, you've been doing just fine without it, what's another day/week/month?
