The reason a proper wristwatch will always trump a smartwatch...

The first gen Apple watches are now obsolete thanks to the newest update to watchOS which is not supported by the early models:

Quote:
Apple's famously expensive, gold Apple Watch is now out of date, just a couple of years after people were buying them for more than $10,000.

As part of a whole suite of upgrades to its products, Apple just unveiled watchOS 5, the new version of its software for its smartwatch. And it won't work on the original version of the Apple Watch.

Some of those original smartwatches were the famous Apple Watch Edition models. Those watches – which came in gold or rose gold, and started at $10,000 but could be bought for even more than that – were famously costly as a result of the rare metals used to make their cases.
(...)
The Apple Watch Edition first went on sale in 2015, and now cannot support the latest version of Apple's software. While it and other first generation watches will continue to work, it is now officially obsolete and won't receive the latest updates or any more to follow.
(...)
Until Apple discontinued new updates for the Watch, developers were required to ensure that their apps worked with all of the models of Apple Watch that had been released.

Yeah, but you can buy a new one for the same cost of a Rolex service?

Yeah, let's see, $8K+ for a Submariner, and $600+ for a service every 5-10 years. I don't think price is an argument for Rolex long term, at least if you're keeping the thing.

Of course, a $10 Casio F91w will easily last decades, so that's probably the smartest choice.

Yeah, recently had a job interview and everyone from at that company was like this several times per hour:
- "Not to be rude, but I gotta get this"
- "Just a minute..."
- "Hold on"

Not at all, I still use mine every day.

When a mechanical wristwatch can:
  1. Show my heart rate
  2. Show my text messages
  3. Track my exercise
  4. Give me GPS coordiantes
  5. Show me calorie burn
  6. Play music
  7. Tell me the weather
  8. Show me news
  9. Get my email

Then we can talk.

These are two different tools for two different purposes. Those who seek to make this a contest are sadly misinformed.

It’s like saying “The reason a proper car will always trump a tractor... “

They might have 4 wheels and a steering wheel but it doesn’t mean the existence of one renders the other useless

That new walkie-talkie feature will be fantastic for couples. My wife sure will make use of it. Very helpful for point to point communications.

I would really like it though if they flattened it and offered it as a health monitor. Just drop it to the bare minimum for those who don’t need quite the cellular functionality offered.

I love my Gen 3 Apple Watch it can do so many things a mechanical watch can't

My only complaint is it really does look ugly/dorky on the wrist compared to a Rolex :(

Interesting post. I had an apple watch for exactly 14 days (maximum time to be able to return) and brought it back, first apple product I've ever done so. Didn't find a lot of utility in it. Will always be a mechanical watch fan.

Love this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uPnTOcCEugU

And he probably said it the best with the last line in video.

But in my opinion, while technology has and will also provide the best advances for the human race. Certain, if not all, tech becomes utterly obsolete and useless as soon as something new comes out.

My Apple Watch Series 2 is a technical marvel and as someone who loves running, I feel liberated when I leave all my possessions behind and with this small little watch, can track my run with all vital signs, and stream music with no cables.

But when I want to experience a mechanical marvel and disconnect from technology, my Pro Pilot is put on my wrist and I'm stunned every time I look down and realise how it's being powered.

Both watches provide great experiences but yes, technology becomes outdated, as one should expect with electronic technology. So maybe spending £10K on a gold Apple Watch is not the most sensible. However, if you spent a £300 on one and have your eyes open, it's a non-issue for me.

If you want it to last forever, then maybe you'll enjoy using MS-DOS or Windows 3.1 over Mac-OSX or Apple iOS 11?

Regardless, I believe they are rather hideous. And lack class. Which is part of the reason I love mechanical watches.

Mechanical and smart watches both have a place and a purpose in life. I agree with others saying this shouldn’t be a competition.

And here's why in spite of all those things it will be seen as a fad. It is redundant to the cell phone which is ubiquitous and won't go away because it has a real screen and not a 1 inch x 1 inch display. Most of those things can be done by almost any fitness tracker. Some of those things I wouldn't want to do on a small screen. As far as value, they are cheap disposable toys with a very limited life time. I personally prefer an exercise tracker like the Fitbit Flex II which is small and minimally invasive. I see plenty of them on people's wrists; how often do I actually see them use them; never.

Where do you think Apple fits within the pyramid below? I'd say down at the bottom.

Exactly why I stopped wearing mine - I felt *too* connected. A regular wristwatch can be an escape from all that - an ever-present token of appreciation for style, history and craftsmanship and an expression of personal taste. You can look at it and forget about all of the mundane junk for a moment or two.

The fact that you can us an Apple Watch for running, music, texts, emails, etc, disqualifies it and traditional watches in any kind of comparison. Very few people buy one to replace the other. The only commonality they share is they are both worn on your wrist.

So what, it will still work. Just not with the latest os. Much like Android phones that don't get the latest updates.

I'm a prior Apple Watch owner. Now my watches doesn't do that stuff but my phone can and more. Why do I need a phone on my wrist when I have my phone on me all the time.

I'm sorry but adult men just look like dorks wearing apple watches. Can't take them seriously. They were mean't for teenage girls in my opinion. The last thing I need is something else to recharge every night. The damn phone is bad enough

Unless/until the smartwatch is solar and/or wind-up mechanical, talking seems off the table tbh

I genuinely don't care what people wear on their wrist. But I must admit... I do think guys look pretty silly with them. I get why people like them though. They are very useful I suppose. I tend to be somewhat of a tech guy but my horological snobbery just won't let me ever wear one.

I have a Garmin GPS watch I use for running which tracks my heart rate, distance, calories, location, pace, etc. Every other thing on your list can be done with the phone alone. What in the world do I need an ugly piece of plastic strapped to my arm that I have to plug in every night for? I get wearing watches for exercising, but there is no way in hell my Rolex is going to be bumped off my wrist but a plastic gadget. My phone does just fine in my pocket...

This is like comparing your fine crystal might not be as good as the McDonalds commemorative cups because it doesnt have any pictures on it and a new picture is
released every week on the cup at McDonalds.

i'm 34 (which may seem old to some around here, but I still party in Vegas!) and while I'm all for technological advancement, I will just never be on board with smart watches. A few thoughts:

1.) I find them hideous
2.) everything that you can do on your smart watch, you can do on your phone
3.) i don't need to be tied to more types of technology...my phone is enough
4.) unless it's for a health condition, there is no need to track calories / steps / exercise on your wrist...eat healthy and exercise. done.

Lastly, for all those saying you can get a new smartwatch for the price of a Rolex - well, your Rolex will not depreciate (if you've bought smartly), and will many times only go up in value...so there you go.
