The watch is a 18038 from 1984. It has the classic champagne dial.

I would go YG with green. Thinking abt that one myself. Values and tastes fluctuate. When I got my DD 36 in 2003 they were less than 10 on the secondary market and I was lucky to get a stone dial..which no one wanted…today it’s worth a lot more. If tastes change it can go back to where I started but I don’t care. I just love wearing them. I have had watches that go as far as the very top of the ‘pyramid’ and I have come back to the DD as my favorite. It’s what I lusted after when I was a kid and I’m lucky enough to have 2 now. These are things you wear for decades so think of it in that light.

Gold pieces have never ever held their value, in fact they usually plummet when you walk out of the AD. Only in covid times they increased. Whatever increase is still there is withering away each month

Both hyped pieces which probably will lose value as most DDs historically do.

If you like the watch and will wear over a long-time frame value retention is un-important. If you will most likely sell in a year or two, I would pass on either one and stick with something in SS.

That’s just too much money, for one watch, IMO. I guess I’m envious that you can even consider such a purchase . That’s brand new car money, in my world.

Agree, it is a colossal amount of money for a watch. As much as I admire the DD, I could just never justify that cost. Too many other things in life that are more important :)

I’m kinda in the same boat. I really am wanting a rose gold and chocolate Day Date. But they’re so expensive! It will be truly difficult for me to justify that kind of purchase. I’ve saved about a quarter of it easily, the other 3/4 will take a while. Also, I think gold will fall in the long run, so maybe the secondary price will come down!

Some great opportunities in the 5 digit market.

This is my 18238 A Serial (1999) Rolex Day-Date with silver dial and sticks. If you're patient and take your time, some real treasures can be found out there.

Nothing like finding a watch someone left in a safe for 20 years....

Yes, mine had been in the safe so long, it had an incredible patina all over the gold (from the copper content as I understand ). Too bad I did not take any picture before having it cleaned (I had to because I wanted to change the dial for one that was 100% pristine and period correct).
A bit like on this internet-taken picture:

Jonathan Marcus at Capetown Diamond in Atlanta.

I'd ask for a scheduled phone call with Jonathan, so he can block some time for you, and discuss with him what you're looking for.

Bracelet and back of caseback when I purchased - basically an unworn "Safe Queen" - not my hands in the pic

This is gorgeous. What reference number? That is. Champagne dial correct…looks “less gold” than current day dates…which I love.

YG with green dial is my favorite dd40. The dial has many shades depending on angle and lighting. Love the Romans and classic yg.

I love the Day Date in yellow gold, it's on my grail list (along with a Lange 1).

I went through my pockets the other day before laundry. I found five movie tickets for a show I took my entire family to during the holidays when my daughter were home from university. I spent $75 bucks on the, and they are now worth absolutely nothing. Nada.

I sure did enjoy my time with my girls and their mama though.

Invest in insecurities, not watches.

Part of my litmus test to help decide if I really love a watch is thinking how much I would appreciate it if it were worth nothing the minute I walked out the door. I would love a gold Day Date for years to income even it were worth nothing.

The value retention is just the cherry on top.

I agree 100%.

As for the speculative future value of the DD40 in the next 10-20+ years, who knows. The watch today has perhaps $10k of justifiable value just based on the amount of gold used along with the other components. So, obviously those of us who buy them today put a lot of value in the prestige or personal desire to own the watch. Will that desire or value placed on that prestige continue 10, 20, or more years down the road? You’d need a crystal ball..

That said, both of the watches you’re looking at are amazing DD configurations and will benefit or lose from the way the market perceives gold watches in the years ahead.

I bought a 18238 DD YG 4 months ago, stunning watch but I'm running into a lot of technical issues.
Even after a RSC overhaul, the power reserve is lagging.
Picked it up a week ago after the service, brought it back today.
11 hours of PR doesn't cut it, even for a 30yr old caliber...
