Seamaster Planet Ocean vs 300m Diver
Hi guys, thinking about my next purchase and really love the Seamaster line of watches. I am really edging towards the PO because I love the wrist presence and size of it - keeping in mind that I own a Panerai and am a HUGE fan of those.
But my dilemma is that I would like something that could also be dressed up a bit in a formal setting. I know that the 300m will fit the bill, it is the James Bond watch after all ;) But wondering if it will be the same case regarding the planet ocean. Any and all input appreciated. Especially if you can make your point with pics :) |

I’ve been trying to decide between the same 2 watches. I think the Diver 300 in black will dress up better. The PO is an amazing watch though. I gave mine to my son and I miss it. I’m thinking of replacing it.

Good! That’s what I ended up buying and I’m very pleased.

I hope it is ok to bump an old thread. I am going through this same dilemma now - PO vs Diver 300m. I am very interested in the 43.5mm Planet Ocean with dark blue dial and orange accents, white dial Diver 300m (likely on rubber), or the grey dial Diver 300m on bracelet. Talk about first world problems, but this is a tough choice! I like certain things about each watch. For instance, I like the wave dial on the Diver 300m, but I like that hands on the PO as well as the bezel and it just looks like the overall finish is a bit nicer on the PO. I also like both bracelets, but it looks like the PO has a nice taper whereas the Diver 300m is just one diameter all the way around.
I really need to try them on again, but that is currently difficult to do as boutiques and ADs are still closed. Thoughts? Why, as quoted above, is the "PO superior in every measurable way"? |

Seamaster Planet Ocean vs 300m Diver

Opposite for me. I thought it would be unwearable from the written specifications, but when I tried it on it fitted like other 42mm watches. Saying that; the SMP is more versatile because it's thinner. Makes a better watch to wear with dress shirts etc (if someone care about that). End of the day, the PO is probably the best [subjectively] looking diver on the market. So it's a tough choice really.

I have the old Seamaster 300M in blue with the wavey blue dial. I was thinking of adding the PO in 39.5M but when I tried it on, the watch was way too thick. The PO is much thicker than the Seamaster Pro. I'm not used to wearing watches that thick so the PO was a no go for me. If Omega just made the watch about 2mm thinner, the PO would replace my 300M.

I think the PO could be dressed up, but it will help that cause if you avoid the brightly colored versions (as much as I love them with the all-orange bezel and numerals!).

I wear my PO with a suit & tie regularly. I think it fits right in. The secret, in my opinion, is to avoid the versions with the bright, contrasting colors.

Personally I think those slight blings on the SMPc might work better when dressed up, and the thinner case should benefit those tight cuffs... but I never had the chance to find out, yet. :)

I would prefer the PO. Way more wrist presence especially considering you're used to wearing a Panerai. While the 300 is beautiful it is too small for my taste.

i just broke my personal record of 16 seconds. new record stands at 15"86.
sorry to hijack. if your going to get a dive watch go for the omega planet ocean. if you want something dressy just buy another dress watch they all look the same anyway but the PO looks different |

Having owned both, I think the 300 diver works much better as a dress watch. No one else will care either way tho

I’m generally not a fan of ceramic bezels, but I’ve owned several 45.5mm Planet Ocean models, including a few 8500 series. I found them just a bit too large and heavy for my taste (I’m a big guy and have 8” wrists) but I’m attracted to the design.
I recently picked up a black dial 8900 series PO in the new 43.5mm size. It’s perfect and I find it the best looking PO I’ve owned. The polished ceramic dial works well with the Liquidmetal bezel and it’s lovely. This size is also ideal, being small enough to comfortably wear with a suit and still having good presence. Here are some photos, including one for size comparison to my 16600 Sea Dweller and Sinn EZM 1.1 |

Congrats! The new Omega adjustable clasps can be easily fitted in place of the stock clasp. It gives Glidelock-like adjustability to the Planet Ocean. On that other forum (the one that starts with a W) there are threads about part numbers. The clasp runs about $150 +/- and you can install it yourself. Enjoy your new Omega. |

Thanks everyone for the responses. I am definitely edging towards the PO. Will try on the 43.5 tomorrow and probably pull the trigger next week.
