Will the Day Date 40 depreciate similarly to other Day Date models?

Right now you can get a used 118238 for about $14-$18k compared to their ~$30,000 starting price. Will the DD 40 take any similar depreciation hit in the coming years? I'm hoping to get the Everose Anniversary green dial 40mm in the coming year.

A good question - I doubt anyone knows the answer. I have often wondered this : so far the DD40 is holding its value reasonably well, and there is not a huge difference between new and pre-owned prices. I guess a 228238 is always going to be worth significantly more than a 118238 though ?

I would venture to say the DD40 is more popular than the 36 and would hold value better. But this is a watch for a lifetime and should be treated as such. I wouldn't worry about value if I owned one.

Who cares? It's the ultimate "cool" watch, and I can't wait to see the day when I pass it along to my boys.

If you have the funds, buy it because you love it - not because of value.

I think that particular dial will hold its value. Even the newest model of DD36 (with the changed end links) is holding value well, but I can’t see that staying forever.

I'm not worried about the loss of value it may take after purchase. It would be a lifetime watch. I was just curious about the price I'd be purchasing at.

the 118238 has been produced for 20 years. in 15 years from now who knows. even if it does depreciate inflation may take it higher. so i doubt in dollars it goes that low. in inflation adjusted relative dollars maybe.

I think the 228238 should be compared to the 218238
And the 218238 is holding value

Got it. I personally don't think you're going to find the 228238 that far off from its current price, whether a year from now or 5 years from now.

I think if you've got your heart (and funds) set on it, then the next coming year is as good as ever.

Most modern Rolex watches will probably hold better than the older models. How well is unknown.

depends on the price of gold maybe.

the movement itself may add a couple thousand premium on top of DJ.

the case is 18k yellow gold and 18k yellow gold on bracelet.

if gold prices soar to 5k per ounce, i bet the DD can hold the value here or diverge even further compared with the DJ

because DD and DJ are so similar, i think gold prices does have an impact on DD resale value in future

Are you trading in the DD you just bought a few weeks ago?

Absolutely not. I will just be adding a 3rd watch.

Good lord, that piece is brilliantly stunning.
