Breitling Navitimer Olympus Review

Now that I've had my Olympus for a month, it's time for a review.

First, the specifications:

Size: stainless steel 43 mm case diameter; 15.4 mm thickness

Crystal: saphire

Movement: B19 ETA 2892-A2 automatic, 28,800 vph, 38 jewels, 42 hr power reserve

Functions: Hour, minute hands, second hand in subdial @ 12:00; chronograph with large sweep second hand, 2 subdials: 12 hour @ 6:00, 30 minute @ 9:00; moonphase window @ 3:00; calendar function includes day in 6:00 subdial, month in 9:00 subdial; date in 12:00 subdial.

Bi-directional bezel with slide rule function

Crown: non-screw locked with two gaskets; two pushers to control chrono function; four flush pushers to set month, day, date and moon phase.

Water resistant to 3 bars

Strap: Breitling black crocodile band with a Breitling stainless steel full deployment clasp, 22 mm.

Discussion:

Once I got the strap adjusted properly, the watch sits very comfortably on the wrist. It's big and bold, unfortunately too big to be worn under some of my tighter cuffed shirts. It is a heavy watch, from the feel, the heaviest in my collection by far, but is still very comfortable to wear. I haven't been strict about measuring accuracy, but my rough calculation seems to put it well within COSC specs.

It's a fun watch, what with all the complications, and for the time being it has replaced the GMT as my every day wearer. Hopefully, the novelty will wear off so I can get back to the GMT, but every morning when I think I will switch back, something says, just wear it one more day. I think I may be developing a problem here.

I will say it was well worth the wait for this one. I am really enjoying it.

(Yes I know the protective seal is still on the back. Sort of like the hologram. I don't remove them. )

Thanks for a great review, Ed. Tell me one thing....what's that smudge on the left hand side of the crystal (at '9') in the first picture? There seems to be some kind of 'stuff' on the crystal that is blurring and obliterating part of the print below!!

Great review Ed!!

That watch is all you pal. I am glad you are giving it a fair workout on the wrist. Variety is the spice of life, or at least it is fun.

It was just some sticky dirt that I finally noticed yesterday and have since removed. The face is all clear now.

how do you find the OEM croc strap and deployant clasp, I've been considering one for a while as a alternative to the breitling bracelet

I definitely like it, Steve. It's very comfortable. For some reason, on the Breitling I prefer the strap to the bracelet. For one thing, it's a lot easier to size the strap than the bracelet. The only minor problem I have with mine is that the clasp is not tight. It has a tendency sometimes to open up. But that can be easily fixed when I get a chance to get over to the AD to have them make the adjustment.

Your new Breitling

Hey Ed Nice photo's

That's a complex looking model. I can't get over how thick the case is. It must weigh about 180grams?

I can't figure why you would leave the GMT at home and wear this one.

Thanks, Steve. There's just something about all the complications that calls to me and fascinates me. I find that I am torn between the Olympus and the GMT. When I wear one I miss the other. One of these days I may start wearing one on each wrist to avoid that problem.

I've been alternating between the two. Most of the week I wear the GMT and then toward the end of the week I strap on the Olympus for a couple of days. I never wear the Breitling with my sleeves rolled down and the cuffs buttoned. The watch is too thick.

These are clearly the two favorite watches in my collection. The GMT is still #1 and always will be, but the Breitling is not too far behind as #2.

As a matter of fact, Bruce, I bit the bullet and pulled it off a while ago. Didn't hurt a bit.

The plastic just doesn't have the same panache as the hologram anyway.

This is a family oriented public forum. I'm afraid I would embarrass you too much to give you the answer.
