Omega Speedmaster newb....help please

My grandpa passed and left me his Omega speedmaster professional, standard size. He cherished the watch and it means a lot to carry his memory with me.

A few items i need assistance with from the community,

- It is a standard silver bracelet, can i switch to leather?
- How would i know if this is manual wind? or are they all that way?
- i see 2 movements available? How would one know?

Any insight is helpful. thank you.

If you can post photos then those would help us to help you. If not, then does the watch look like this one?:

Any Omega with the name Speedmaster Professional on its dial should have a hand-wound movement.

Yes, you should be able to switch to a strap in place of its bracelet.

Sorry to hear of the loss of your grandpa, but he knew how to pick a good watch

Few things are more meaningful than passing on a cherished family member's timepiece. Depending on when it was made, and overall condition, it could be extremely valuable. Good photos of the front and backside of the watch and bracelet would be helpful for us to guide you with long term decisions.

Or, does it look like this one?

Yep, it's a classic Speedmaster Professional with a hand-wound Caliber 861 movement. I believe that's probably a reference 3590.50, or possibly a 145.022 (just different reference numbers that Omega has used to indicate minor updates over the decades that the Speedmaster Pro has been produced). Your grandpa's watch was probably produced in the 1980s. The Speedmaster Pro hasn't changed much since then, as you can see from photos.

When the movement has run all the way down, it should take ~30 twists of the crown to wind it all the way up. Simply wind it until you reach a resistance point. It'll run for ~48 hours on a full wind, but you should wind it each morning when you put it on (should take ~15 twists to reach a full wind if you do it every day).

Most Speedmaster Pro owners avoid submerging them in water. It's okay to wipe it with a damp cotton wash cloth if it ever gets gunky enough for that, but you probably want to avoid dunking it or rinsing it under the tap.

There are lots of strap options that work well for that watch, so perhaps members here will share the make/model of their favorites. I like to wear mine on Omega's black alligator made for use with Omega's deployant clasp:

As for straps, the Speedy is the ultimate strap monster IMO. I alternate between the OEM black alligator/deployant and aftermarket straps - a brown racing strap, green vintage, brown dress and several NATO straps.

FWIW, I like B&R Bands a lot. Fair prices, great quality.
