Rolex GMT and GMT II

I just finished watching an Urban Gentry YouTube video regarding the desirability of owning a Date-Just. The watch has been made since 1945 and, of course, modernized through the years. However, it has always been called the DJ. It has never been renamed the DJ II somewhere along the way. The Submariner was never superseded by a II version. Why was the GMT renamed the GMT II during its run?

There is a DJ II - I believe its a slightly larger diameter (41mm) if I recall correctly. It might not be printed as such on the dial, but I believe the official name of it has the number 'II' in it.

There were two concurrent GMT sapphire models during the 1980s and into the 1990s.

The GMT Master was never renamed during it's run, which began in 1954 and ended in 1999.

The GMT II is a different watch introduced in 1983 and was sold along-side the GMT Master for almost 20 years.

The most recent version is the DJ41 not 40 although it's 39.5mm. I guess it's how Rolex shrinks the size while pretending not to. The DJII was a true 41mm. The GMTII was a functionally different watch then the GMT. The GMT only could track two time zones where as the II can track three. Similarly the Exp II is a functionally different watch than the Exp.

You are correct, I always confuse the new DJ and DD...
