I bought my first Rolex in 1981, and have worn Rolex since then, and nobody has ever commented on it. Just the way I like it, being a Brit, I do Rolex spot all the time, but I never ever comment to the wearer.

Valet Driver in Montauk a few weeks ago. Very funny conversation:

Driver: Wow, awesome watch (my "hulk" LVC).

Me: Oh thanks so much!

Driver: I have the same one but it's blue.

Me: oh nice, is it the TT sub or WG?

Driver: hmmm, I think it's platinum.

Me: platinum? I don't think they ever made a platinum Sub. They make a white gold version with blue dial and bezel.

Driver: well my uncle gave it to me, and he has connections, so I'm pretty sure Rolex made it custom for him.

Me: Oh, that's awesome! (In my head: this conversation needs to end)!

My TT GMT II gets compliments all the time, particularly from women. I think it's the way the serated bezel gleams in the light.

I respond in exactly the same way. Even if I wanted people to know I had a real Rolex I'm not going to spend time justifying myself to some random guy.

I have a funny story. The other day I was at the sales counter in the mall, a sales lady looked my left hand and then said wow, that's a nice ring! I said thank you but laughed as I walked away. I thought I have a $12k watch on and a $45 tungsten ring I got from amazon, and she noticed and complimented the ring. Lol!

Actually, given bluesy was my only watch and I wore it day in day out, I have had many occasions when people noticed it and talked about it. Perhaps they were surprised to see me doing the things I was doing (rafting in river, etc.) with a 'gold' watch on my hand.

yeah he must have been a total idiot to say that. It doesn't surprise me to see others with Rolex, especially if it fits the situation or their job title etc., I see and notice a lot of Rolexes on mom and dads at school gatherings, etc., which is not surprising given the neighborhood and general SF Bay Area location. Also see a lot on airplanes on tourist destinations, again not out of place for people who are spending $5k on a vacation to have a nice watch on.

I don't take offense either, and in casual situations and with strangers I usually say it is a fake one for exact same reasons you mention.

This is the best valet driver story I've ever heard. Sounds like a great spinoff thread idea...

Custom made for his uncle by Rolex, he sure must be an important guy.

Funnily enough I read an article the other day on how to spot a fake watch, and one of the ways mentioned was..... a close friend or family member gives it to you lol

Think the valet and uncle scenario fits the criteria

Chaps

There has only been one occasion when someone noticed my Rolex and it was the 39mm Explorer.

I was having lunch with my wife in a rather pleasant restaurant in Oxford and the waiter just said - " Sir is wearing a very nice watch" and then he walked off.

I was tempted to retort " well I would hardly wear a rubbish one would I"

Regards

Mick

Yes nobody notices my Daytona 116503 but I've had a few complements on my Sub 116613LB one I could have done without. This guy asked me where did I get the watch & I'm quite sure he was going to mug me if I showed any weakness. But I gave him a smart answer & kept walking

A shoe salesman in a high end clothing store commented on my Explorer the first day I wore it. Have not had anyone comment on it since unless the conversation was already about watches. I prefer not to receive comments on my watches unless it's from another WIS, and then I enjoy the conversation of course.

Airport in Kansas City last week.....a guy wearing a bluesy commented on my 116610...he commented and shortly thereafter an older gentleman walked by wearing another bluesy. Two bluesys and a submariner on a flight from kC to Minneapolis ...lol

My clients and I LOVE to discuss our watches. Well, the WIS love to anyway... Most people are pretty clueless unless they actually like watches. I've had a few people who noted I had a "nice watch" on; but couldn't tell much else. The nurses and therapists I see during my physical therapy sessions took a LONG time to notice, and they have literally worked on my hands two hours a day, three times per week for the last six consecutive months. Granted they have all since noticed; but the longest one took like three months.

Hi Chadri, did you take the driver's phone number?
I think I need to make a contact with his uncle, cause I want a custom original Rolex too that will be one of the kind

I was in the ER a few weeks back being wheeled on a gurney for a CT scan the tech who was wheeling me noticed my Tudor Chrono and started discussing watches with me. He like it.
