Two questions I've always wanted to know
Gentlemen,
I have always wanted to know two things: 1) If you have your triplock crown unscrewed, like a Submariner, not the twinlock one, how waterproof is the watch? Splash proof? Or can it be submerged with no damage? 2) How does the shock-proof system in a Rolex work in a fall? I have always been curious as to what happens if you drop your watch, and how the movement protects itself. Thanks all! |

David, I'm not a tech guy so how the shock-proof systems works is best left to those that are.
However; one of the great things about the OLD Rolex site was the wealth of information provided about their watches. On that old site was documentation of tests conducted by the MOD of tests of the Submariner where they conducted dives with the crowns unscrewed to assess potential damage.....there was none. How sad that all this history is no longer available by the mothership in favor of bling. Just shows the direction they wish to pursue. |

There are many waterproof watches that do not have screw down crowns... The Rolex stem and inner seals are as good as any of them... the screw down gasket is simply an extra barrier..
As for the shock system......... it is a jewel mounted in a tapered hole... it can move slightly when jarred, then the spring clip at the end will gently nudge it back into place..

That's good to know for myself as I was a bit worried when I noticed my crown was unscrewed a bit while I was cleaning it under water.
