I’m not sure a planned attack on a million dollar watch would make me any more worried to wear an Explorer around, for example. Interesting times.
It takes less than 20 seconds to take you down, hurt you and steal your watch.

They will take anything, doesn't matter how old it is or beat up as long as it has some value. Even if they end up stealing a fake Rolex or AP it's worth it for them.

$1M Hublot stolen during Barcelona mugging

I suppose the risk is ever-present in any city where wealthy tourists flock.

It is also risky whether is was the lesser sibling worth $10K vs the one-off $1MM Bang.

It is likely a media mistake - both have black caviar in the name so the confusion is natural.

To us the differences are obvious but not necessarily to street thugs.

A spokesperson for the force said: ‘I can confirm we are investigating the violent theft of a designer watch worth £685,000 following a complaint from a tourist.

A "complaint"? He's complaining? He's the one who went out without bodyguard.

If you have $1m on a timepiece... and it's a Hublot............ with all due respect to Hublot and RM of course.

That's because you've got some beyond long arm reach should the fists fly. Unfair school yard brawl would ensue.

Here are the actual two pieces. It's difficult to read the time on these, but I appreciate them for what they are -- which is jewelry. Unlike a Rolex, these have no pretense of being a utilitarian tool, which is refreshingly honest.

Haha they are oddly disproportionate.

I doubt the scum who stole it can even get 1% of the MSRP. Whose going to buy a stolen 1 of 1 watch that easily recognizable. They’ll have better luck selling the diamonds than the watch. Right now I bet someone has a small baggie full of black diamond baguettes and there’s a hublot movement and leather strap in the trash.

I imagine this would move rather quick on the black market. Its not like organized criminals aren't fans of jewelry themselves. When you hang around a bunch of criminals, who's going to call you out on flexing a stolen watch? It most likely just becomes an asset to the organization at that point. Probably still worth 100k on the streets as a relative store of value.

Like if someone fronts them 100k in product thats also illegal, they could give them the watch as collateral should they get arrested or otherwise default on their front.

I've managed a pawn shop for almost 10 years and have never had a robber sell us stolen goods. Just family members stealing from amongst themselves. The people targeting watches seem to be far too organized just to dump a million dollar watch for scrap. Especially when the diamonds wouldn't yield much on their own

Seems like the value may have been inflated.

This is the moment a mugger stripped a luxury watch off an American tourist's wrist in front of his family in Barcelona, with cops valuing the timepiece at $45,000 (£37,000) - days after the man reportedly told them it was worth $800,000 (£685,000).

Sounds like a page right out of Richard Mille 'theft advertising' marketing scheme to ensure their brand in is the headlines and gets press coverage. Desperate times call for desperate measures i guess.
