GMt
Just got this three months ago after waiting 43 years, first saw a Pepis GMT in Hong Kong while on leave in 1970. They were $300 which was more then I made all month even with my combat pay. Have wanted one ever since, got a couple of other Rolex's but the Pepis was always on my mind. Finally found one here on TRF and could not be happier, been wearing it everyday till last week. It did not have any service history so I sent it to RSC, can't wait for it's return.

I can see where my post might be a bit misleading. I bought it earlier this year, and the weather was so nice over the weekend that I decided to have a little photo shoot.

I bought mine during a TDY (USAF) in the mid eighties. It has served me well , went around the world and joined me during Desert Shield / Storm.
Here it is with my Accutron Astronaut. I love the GMTs! |

Had it for 18 months. My 3rd Rolex and the first second-hand one. I wear it mostly on week-ends and in the summer/warm climates. For me the sexiest Rolex.

I have an experience similar to Jem1947, seeing a GMT on Jan. 15, 1971 while on R&R in Hong Kong, but I bought mine there. I had planned it for months, shopping for the best price and finding it at the China Fleet Club (U.S. Navy Exchange) for $847HK. At the exchange rate of 6.06:1 the bottom line was $140US (new, no tax), compared to $180 at the PX in Viet Nam and $255 + tax in the U.S. The SN is 2.32m.
In about 1980 the original bezel ring (left photo) popped off while working in the yard and I replaced it (right photo), which has been on the watch ever since. The original was found a few years later and it now stays in a safe place. The original fat-font insert has faded quite a bit and I would like to preserve it in its current state, as the replacement ring and insert look very good on the watch, IMO. The dial and hands are original, as well as most everything else, and AFAIK only the mainspring, crystal, band, spring bars, and threaded stem tube have been replaced in the last 43 years. |
