Vacheron Overseas 47040 and service cost

Hi guys,

I just got my Overseas 47040 white dial (2nd gen) at the end of 2018 when travelling in Japan. The watch is 10-year old in as new condition, keeping +2 seconds every day. It's a bit expensive due to recent strong JPY, foreign transaction fee and credit card surcharge, but overall I am happy with it so far.

Considering many people talking about the expensive VC service cost, I sent an email to get complete service price in AUD and attached it below.

IMO the service cost (1100 AUD) is expensive but kind of reasonable compared with others, eg. Rolex. Of course, we can send the watch to watch dealers to do the service for around half price (500-700 AUD in Melbourne, Australia), but I guess that's off the topic.

HTH

Happy new year. :D

Thanks for the info. Wonder what the Overseas chrono would cost? 50% more...100%?

Thanks for the info.

That service cost for a 3 hander with date complication sounds reasonable.

If the watch is running great, I would just pressure test it and then wear the hack out of it. :)

Deviation is only one aspect to gauge a movement’s starte of health, the other equally, if not more, important aspect is amplitude.
As long as both are good numbers, then seal integrity is the next concern before being worry-free regarding a 10 yo unserviced watch.
For that you’ll need to invest in a decent enough timegrapher or have an indpendent repairer/centre check it on theirs, as well as pressure test it.

I recently serviced my 2nd generation overseas on chrono this year and i believe routine service was about $1200 and took 6 weeks.

I am not sure, but based on my own experience of Omega watches, it should be 40-50% more.

That's a super cool watch. I got a chance to buy one at a good price but missed it. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks for the professional tips.

I sent the watch to an independent watch dealer and have a quick test. The deviation is good so far (0~+3s per day), and pressure test looks good as well. The amplitude is a bit low - around 220~230. So as a result, I was told the watch may need a service for the mainspring.

Any suggestions, please? Thanks. :D

Entirely up to you, but with those numbers and an indication the seals are still performing their duty, I’d just enjoy it for the next 12-18 months before having it serviced — especially if it’s going to be worn in rotation with your other watches.
If it’ll see 3-4 days constant wear weekly, then maybe give it 6 months before handing it over.
