Does this GMT Master II look correct?
Hello Everyone,
A local pawnshop is offering a Rolex GMT Master II with an F serial number which I am considering. I've only seen two of these watches in person and don't want to make a mistake . Do the bezel and bezel insert look correct for this vintage watch? All of the photos that I have seen online seem to indicate a matte finish on the scalloped bezel edges, and serif fonts on the bezel insert. This watch has polished bezel edges and the insert does not have serif fonts. Otherwise everything about the watch looks authentic to me. Thanks in advance for any insight. Jim |

I think it looks good! It will have the etched crown in the crystal, at 6:00, if you have a loop to check it. Interested to know what movement is in it!

Hi Gladiator and kirksingleton,
Thank you both for your information and for taking the time to post. Gladiator, how can you tell? Kirk, I looked at the full size versions of the photos and can clearly see the etched crown at 6:00. Thanks for pointing that out! I'm wondering if the top of the bezel ring may have been polished when the watch was serviced? After looking at dozens of photos of similar vintage watches in the Rolex Sale section I found at least one F serial (2004) watch with a Pepsi insert that has this type of font. None of the watches I've seen online seem to have a polished bezel ring. Is there anything else that I should look for? Thanks again, Jim |

Hi Gladiator and KirkSingleton,
Thank you for your expertise and for taking the time to post. Gladiator, how can you tell? Kirk, I looked at the full sized photos and can clearly see the etched crown at 6:00. Thanks for pointing that out! I wonder if the edge of the bezel may have been polished when the watch was serviced? I've studied dozens of photos of similar vintage GMT Master II on the Rolex Brand sales section and have not seen a single watch that had a polished bezel ring. I did find one other F series with a similar font on the bezel insert. Thanks again for sharing your thoughts on this. Jim Last edited by minimalista; 9 May 2016 at 02:33 PM.. Here is a shot of mine, it is also a f serial number. It is the only photo I have as mine is in the safe but it may help. It looks like mine is polished also (if we are talking about the same piece)

Yes, I saw the crown in your shots. Your watch appears to be shiney overall but that could just be the last owner polishing it themselves. The watch looks good to me. How much is it?

Hello Everyone,
Gladiator, the etched crown is visible in the full size version of the second photo. Not sure you can see it on the posted pic. Kirk, thank you for posting your photo. Your watch looks like it has a matte finish. The one I am looking seems to much more reflective. How hard is is to replace the bezel insert? I've seen youtube videos that make it look easy. But I am wary of breaking the assembly. The shop is asking around $5200 for the watch. It was offered for a little less but I was told that the price was only good until the next day. David, thanks for your insight. Best, Jim |

mine looks matte because I had just hit it with a green pad. Easy to swap insert, I think. I was able to get mine out fine and am waiting for the mail to bring me the pepsi to snap in. $5100 is a good price for that watch. I see your concern with the polish but it wouldn't bother me at all. As long as the seller is reputable I wouldn't have any concerns. Does it have box and papers? Many don't these days, not a deal breaker. I think you could buy it, wear it and always get all of your money back out later if you want. Good luck!
