There was some query last night on TV why he didn't go with the Dodgers, being close to home, and all. Because it's the damn New York Yankees, that's why. They're the stuff of legend. I'm far from a Yankees fan, but if I could have a dream of winning a World Series come true, I'd want to have that world famous NY on my ring.

And another reason it was NY...

Yes, that kid in the picture...
When Cole was 11, he was at Bank One Ballpark in Phoenix for Game 6 of the 2001 World Series dressed in a Yankees cap and jersey holding a handmade sign that read: “Yankee Fan Today, Tomorrow, Forever.”

How hard has inflation hit the starting pitcher market in New York?
It was just over a decade ago when the Yankees signed CC Sabathia to a then record deal of 7 years @ $161 million. That worked out to a cool $23 million per year.
Cole's 9 years at $324 million works out to $36 million a year.
Regular inflation over that time would have raised Sabathia's '23' to something close to 28.

It's staggering how much baseball can pay players.

I think in the NHL the top is something like 11 million a year and a team cap of around 82 million for 23 players. And only the very very best make over 8 million.

Probably why players coming out of college with both baseball and hockey scouts after them generally go to baseball.

Less chance of getting hurt (longer career) and more money.

Imagine if hockey players kept the fitness level of some of todays baseball stars lol And had chew in during a 3rd period power play kill.

Strasburg just signed a huge $$ deal to remain with the Nationals after exploring free agency. Can't remember the figure but he is definitely cashing in the big haul.

The glamour of being the poor guy that has to clean the dugout after a game.

Hazmat suits and shovels.

You could, but in Boston they really mean it. I’ve heard the Yankees Suck chant at Celtics games, Bruins games, Pats games, and even at events that weren’t sports related.
