Manufactured Movement

Hello Guys,

I have been a Rolex owner but recently I took a look (I SHOULD NOT HAVE) at the NEW WAVE SUPEROCEAN ...

I fell in LOVE instantly. What is the deal with Manufactured Movement? My friend told me he would never buy a watch without it.. WHat am I missing? What does Breitling have?

How is the quality if Breitling and why is it soooo much cheaper than Rolex?

In my opinion the NEW WAVE looks better and has better depth rating than a SUB..

Manufactured movement? Dont all movements go through a manufacturing process? Maybe he means that Breitling doesnt use a proprietary movement, only a modified one from a movements manufacturer like ETA. Honestly, it doesnt matter who made the movement so long as the watch itself is accurate, durable and has the features you need. I think people give too much emphasis on proprietary movements, forgetting that there are many great watches out there that do without at a fraction of the cost.

Thats also probably the main reason why theyre cheaper. Quality-wise, Id say theyre on par if not more durable than Rolex. Breitling prides itself for being the choice of professionals, namely in the field of aviation. But, as youve seen, their divers models are really great as well. I have the older model Superocean and I definitely think its a very solid timepiece. Rolex has its roots in the field of diving having practically started the thing, but theyve allowed some of their models to stagnate like the sub. Today many manufacturers have models with similar or better features at even a third the cost.

Ohh OK thanks... So ETA is a company then? They make the movement and sell it to like Breitling or Invicta? This is confusing but I think I am getting the hang of it...

Yup, ETA is the largest movements manufacturer in the world. At one point they supplied 80% of all the watches available from little known brands to super high end brands.

Today there are other manufacturers but they sell mostly ETA "clones." And since ETA is limiting outside sales, watch manufacturers are now looking to proprietary movements.

Manufactured movement is the common and understood term when discussing a proprietary or In-house made movement...

Thought that the biggest movement manufacturer in the World would be Seiko.
But alas, they don't sell their movements to other companies.... ;-)

ETA is a Swiss manufacturer. Its this that allows many non-Swiss brands to add "Swiss Made" to their watches eventhoug the watch itself was never built in Switserland. I recently read an article in which this was discussed and how the Swiss are actually thniking of prohibiting the sales of ETA movements to non-Swiss watch makers.
