It really depends on what type of pen your are looking to buy...the main types(I imagine I have missed something) of better quality pens are Ballpoint, Rollerball and Fountain pens. If you are just starting out it's best to go to a store and try out some of the different pens before you ever think of buying.....

Thanks for the reply, I'm not gonna start collecting curious about their price points, thinking of getting a buddy of mine a pen for a gift since he collects them

Have fun with your pen collecting, you have a ton of options for your collection. Outside of very expensive limited editions I don't think they will appreciate though so don't expect to sell more than you pay. You can save a lot of money with used pens but if bought online you cannot try out.

Check prices on auction sites to get an idea of used prices. Beware fakes though when buying online auctions.

very nice pen. My first really nice FP was a Mont Blanc. Ironically I could sell it today, used, for three times (or more) what I paid for it. My next set were Pelikans in the 800 series. if you go to some of the FP stores in person you can get nice discounts. There are several stores worth spending time in: Fahrneys in DC and Fountain Pen Hospital in NYC are just two. For advice on care, feeding and ink, check out Gouletpens.com Brian Goulet has taken customer service to a new level and his videos on pens, ink, paper and care are a nice value to those of us who appreciate pens.
