Advice on buying Omega watch in New York
Sorry for starting a new thread about this, but I posted this message in another thread a couple of days ago, and no luck - so hopefully I can get some better response by putting it in a new one instead.
This is what I wrote; From somebody who's not buying watches in the US on a regular bases, that being me Is it very common to get up to 30% discount on a Omega watch from an AD? I'm asking because I'll be visiting NY in a couple of weeks, and it would be interesting to know a little more about this because I might try to find something for my wife. But perhaps it would be difficult to get this kind of discount from an AD in a place like NY (Manhattan that is)? So any advice here would be most appreciated! Cheers, Joe

If you go to the Omega boutique, you will get zero discount; AD might give you something. My advice, contact Father John here and have him e-mail the info on his AD (amazing prices), he can have the watch shipped to your hotel and you can save quite a bit. Several members here have bought this way.

Joe,
The NYC boutique offers zero discounts and the few remaining ADs max out at about 15%. My suggestion would be to shop the boutique to make a selection then call and order the watch from my AD who will overnight it to your hotel. He does this frequently. Fr. John† |

The method suggested (ship to your hotel from out of state) should save the rather high NYC sales tax as well.

Interesting that you are in Shanghai, and thinking to buy while in NYC. I often see
posts about members headed to, Asia and wondering where to buy in Hong Kong and Singapore. And then there is talk of buying in Europe if you are a tourist and claiming your sales tax/VAT back ... Does anyone have info on which city/country prices are usually lower? Or does that vary with the Brand and the specific model?

Hong Kong used to be a good option, but not anymore, because they hardly offer you any discount. Europe, depending on the situation and how much the AD is prepared to lower the price, might sometimes be the way to go because you can get the VAT back when you're flying back. But when we're talking Omega, I guess so far the US (and if you get the right contacts like what's been suggested in this thread, and ship to another state) is the better option. And then you have the value of different currencies to think about as well. So I guess it depends on many different situation really. Cheers, Joe

Thanks. That is good to know.
I am not sure if they have Ben Bridge in New York, but this fairly large chain is being dropped as an Omega AD, and is freely offering discounts of about 25% of their stock that is in their store (ie. you cannot order models that they do not have). However, that is LA, and 25% on Omega is likely matched by others. Additionally, note that in the US, the sales tax vary by state (and less so by city/county in a state). I am not sure if there is any significant difference between sales tax in New York vs. that in New Jersey and Connecticut, which are fairly close to NY city.

The UK is currently IMHO the best place to purchase at the moment with the weak pound and tax free option. Just picked up a Solar Impulse which included a decent discount for an attractive price. In KL at the moment and the AD here didn't believe me when I mentioned the price. Not sure how long it'll last though as there are expectations that there'll be another price correction soon.
BTW good to see you around again Joe... Quote:

Get in contact with Father John.
I can attest that Hong Kong, while a watch fanatic heaven with a Luk Fook or Emperor every 100 yards, no longer offers any discount. This is because so much money is coming from China that there really isn't any incentive for dealers to discount. Expect full retail. With Shenzhen being a new regional Silicon Valley, expect luxury goods and real estate prices to climb. Same with Macau. Hence there is alot of resentment from HK and Macau citizen towards the mainlanders. One great thing about HK is that it is a service environment. I was treated with tea and non-pushy salespersons at every location I visited. I handled watches which in the US I would have been looked down upon (Patek Phillippe, A. Lange & Sohne, etc...). Treatment is so much different there. In China, I couldn't find one higher/mid jewelry store (AKA, Ben Bridge, Tourneau, etc...). Observation: In HK, everyone wears a watch. In China, practically no one wears a watch. |

Pretty sure you can't buy new Omegas in NYC anymore except at the Omega boutique on Fifth Avenue. The other ADs in the city were dropped so the boutique has an exclusive on new watches.

I think there are still a couple of places, but most of the ADs in Manhattan were dropped.

AD's in NYC
There are still a few AD's in NY who carry Omega, but if you are looking for an Omega with the new movement you will have to buy at the boutique on 5th Ave. or the one down near Wall Street.
