paul newman reissue coming?

Was at my watchmaker (ex rolex technician) and he told me he has got insider news that rolex is gonna roll out a new daytona with PN dials.

With 4130 engines in ss.

Fat hope?

Would be nice but doubt it. Was chatting with local AD the other day and he didn't mention this. Wonder if he still would be a rolex tech if he had insider news.

He did tell me that his store rebranded its name and gave up a well known name used for over 50 years to keep their rolex account because they had become associated with "discounting"

Would be nice, but I don't buy into any "insider news" when it comes to Rolex.

If that was true your watchmaker most probably wouldn't know about it, I don't see anybody being able to give him the scoop at Rolex...

What he'd be talking about is a dial/bezel update for Basel 2014 - not something Rolex would do mid-year.

Can't see him having any special news from his position sitting outside the firm.

The times I have heard the expression insider news I could write a book, what insider news in most cases mean is complete BS.But agree that a modern Daytona like say the 6263 with its aluminum black insert would be a Daytona I could get excited about.

Insider news if true would be good for all of us. Should bring down the prices of vintage PN Daytonas to something I could afford. Hope hope.

Mmmmmm not sure what to make of any "tip offs"

but my AD just got back from new UK RSC and was told assuredly - daytona will never be anything other than 40mm - as they still have millions of cases - and its a huge success as it is

Rolex kind of missed the boat on it. Not knocking the platinum Daytona, just that a steel reissue would have been HOT.

I heard the same thing from someone who claimed to have inside info, maybe it's the same person. By any chance, was it this guy?

Yes, but Rolex makes the highest profit on gold and platinum .... Hence they produce less in ss ...

The first Daytona wasn't branded until 1964 so 2014 technically is the 50th Daytona anniversary. I bought my SS Daytona partially on the belief that 2014 will bring about a 50 year design change.

"To many collectors, Rolex chronographs are grouped into two categories - Daytonas and "others". And while Rolex has been making chronographs since the 1930s it wasn't until 1963 that the line of watches was categorized and named - and Daytona wasn't its first name. The original concept for this racing-inspired watch was The Rolex LeMans, - a true Mark I Daytona - is called LeMans. Needless to say, the name didn't stick, as Rolex's push into the American market and into official sponsorship of the 24 hour race at Daytona led to the naming of the reference 6239 Cosmograph as the Daytona. That didn't happen until 1964, "
