Update:

RSC Pennsylvania called AD Richmond, AD Richmond called me. Rolex Service Center needed non-refundable authorization ($500.00) to evaluate the watch, research parts availability and determine what was needed.

I authorized.

RSC will call AD in 20 business days with update and to get my approval for recommended work.

Think it is wise to get the job scope in writing from your AD before giving the green light

Wow, $500 that is non-refundable just for an estimate/evaluation? Crazy. Last time I went to the RSC in NYC, about three years ago, they wanted $150 to evaluate my 5512. I walked. Still, if you're committed to this RSC, presumably the $500 goes toward the final service cost. Good luck.

I guess they don't want to spend the time researching what it needs and parts availability only to have me possibly say "Forget it". I understand.

Thanks, the 500 will be credited into the final work. Hopefully they can do the work, LOL.

Yeah, I'm committed to RSC, unless they end up not being able to help me.

I would have a stroke if I sent my Red Sub to an individual and all of a sudden I couldn't get in touch with them. Too many eggs in one basket for my Red Sub comfort level.

I'm not talking about theft, I'm talking about illness, simple error, or a multitude of other things,(or excuses), that make a single individual an example of all the eggs in one basket.

If I have to go that route I may, but I'm not comfortable doing it. To each their own..........

I'd much rather deal with someone possibly getting sick, than deal with the receptionist reading my note and then forgetting to pass it along to the technician who actually works on the watch. No matter, you made your choice and I hope it works out well for you.

When he says "independent watchmakers", I'm inclined to believe he's referring to trusted and valued places like ABC Watchwerks (rather than some guy working out of his living room or something!). These places are world renowned and, to vintage collectors, provide a valuable service.
Cheers.

Update:

AD called last night. RSC Pennsylvania says, Fixing stem and Service cost is $2100.00

I said no thanks. Send the watch back and Ill pay the $500.00 I already agreed to.

$2100.00 to fix a stem and do a service is a bit steep, correct?

I may take the watch here when I get it back:

The above is the only way to go. I have used one of the above previously and received a phone call directly from that person regarding what parts and service was needed before any work was started. You will be very pleased with the work of any of them.

So it cost you $500 to have them open and inspect your watch?...ouch

That is an expensive lesson learned.

Ouch that is crazy. You could have had a service completed for the $500 from some independents.

I would make sure this watchmaker has a Rolex parts account, if they don't find someone local who does. They might do a great job but if they can't get genuine parts what are they using?

Good Luck!

John - this is a tough call.

I know that you want the experience and know how of RSC but just be sure to that you are 100% clear in what you want done. Even then I would be nervous bc you are not dealing with them directly but through a third party. Kind of like when you tell a story and its goes around the table and changes from person to person.

I personally would prefer to deal directly with the person completing the repair. This way you are 100% that there is no confusion or different interpretation of your wishes.

Light buff is too subjective and open to interpretation in my opinion.

Also, one thing worth putting out there. Use the TRF community for what it's for: advice from people who have been there done that. Learn from others mistakes. It seems the vast majority of people in this thread are recommending using an independent and there's a reason for that. Do a little more research and make sure you are making the best decision possible with whom you choose to entrust this heirloom.

What a second...... THEY CHARGED YOU $500 TO INSPECT THE WATCH ?!?!?!?!?!?!?

There's no way. Is the AD charging you that or RSC?

Five hundred non-refundable dollars?? And for no work done?? Good lord, that is an hard hit. I'm really sorry, man.
And in re. to the link you posted about maybe taking it to that local guy (Watchandpen.com) why not just take the advice of so many on here and send it to one of the recommended experts, like ABC?

Mailing my heirloom across the country to someone I have never met makes me nervous as hell. Especially with regard to some recent "events". At least I can look this guy in the eye and he is only minutes away from my work.
