Advice Wanted: 1016
Hey everyone,
I've been wanting to get a 1016 for a while now. There's one that came up for sale here and the seller approved of me asking the forum concerning the dial (great guy!). I've searched around for other '69 1016s, but all I'm seeing is the frog coronet from this era: Here on VRM the 3rd photo seems to have a very similar coronet, but the era isn't specified : http://www.network54.com/Forum/20759...+funky+coronet. Would love to see if any of you can give me further insight. Here's the dial in question. Thanks everyone! |

Next, you buy a 1016 for it's wearability. It's still the best looking watch Rolex ever created, it feels as fresh today as it did back in 1960. So that said, the dial/markers/lume/hands look terrific, it's going to be a great daily-wearer, and it's at a very good price considering it comes with box and papers too. I was on the hunt for a 1016 just a month ago and I'd have bought this one if it were available back then. My advice: Forget logo's. Buy it tonight. And welcome to the 1016 club. |

But, the question remains. Why is the coronet different than other 69s? Like the OP, I don't recall seeing a '69 with this version. |

It appears to be the same coronet as the dial on my 1960 which is an RSC replacement circa 1979 which is when service records show it was revised. The crystal on his candidate is a replacement beveled and slightly domed version from a service as well. Guessing from the lume the hands were revised at this same service, probably 20 years ago. It's a good price for a daily-wear 1016 with B&P. If the OP wants to spend another $2,000 for something similar with an original dial he certainly can. |

Hey Junbug good to see you.
I have not seen any original examples of this dial variation for that era. I am not as well read on the 1016 as I am on Subs and GMT's but I did study the reference quite a bit. I think Speedolex may correct in that it may be a service replacement. Although his t<25 is at the bottom of the hashes at 6 and yours are on top of the hashes. Generally the gilt dials had the Swiss T<25 on top of the hashes. Hopefully someone will come along to verify.

Thanks, everyone for your insights. Whether it's an original or a service dial, it certainly peaked my interest. And yes, the seller is legit (and a great guy!).
Finally, hi DTM :) Good to see ya too. |
