Vintage Sea Dweller question
Hello all,
I ran across this today at a vintage watch shop. The price seems reasonable and to it looks legit. Although I don't have any experience with Rolex.... I know it's a crappy cell pic but it has a very nice patina, runs, and appears to be in great shape. Assuming it's real, what is the ball park value? I'm actually searching for a vintage Speedmaster but this may disway me...depending on your opinion I'll go back and get more details. Thanks! Matt Oh, he also has a vintage GMT Master, with a nicely faded bezel... Not sure of the value on that either.. [IMG][/IMG] |

Looks like one of the first sapphire glass models, a 16660.
Dial condition is very important to value. Glass nibbled at upper edge? That's expensive to replace, with a Rolex service! If it has no original numbered COSC certificate and the dial shows its age then I would suggest something like £4,000 might be reasonable on these shores. A better dial, better condition watch with papers could be half as much again. Haywood M

Thanks Haywood!
Yes, the crystal has a rough spot between the 12 and 1 position. The dial is in great faded shape, the case is in good condition as well. I didn't get into a lot of detail with him about it. I was mainly looking for vintage Omegas and asked to look at this one real quick. His price is a little under what you think it might be worth.. I could likely talk him down a little more.. I'll go by again in a few days and inquire further. |

Play on the points mentioned and the bracelet if it is loose and has a lot of play, as it may well do, looking at the photo.
Bon chance! Haywood

Hard to tell for sure based on that one fuzzy photo, but I'd say that case has been polished too much, and not very well. The lower right lug looks very thin. Also, the hands have definitely been replaced at some point, hence the mismatched patina, and some of the hour markers look as if they're missing chunks of tritium. Regardless of the price, all those issues would bug me. Again, better photos would help. Good luck either way.
