Journe or Patek

Hello,

I am hoping to get some advice. Please take price and or availability out of the equation. I also want to say, yes, I am very lucky to have this as a 'problem'

I am looking for an everyday watch, something that I can dress down or up and is a bit under the radar so to speak. I've narrowed it down to two:

The FP Journe Chronometre Souverain in platinum:

The Patek Philippe 5146g, white gold, gray dial:

(Photos stolen from the interwebs)

I like the Patek because I think it is very subtle with the dark dial and I like the complications that I think add some nice visual interest to the dial while still being practical. I don't like that it is a so well known brand and the movement is far less interesting (than the Journe).

I like the Journe because it is very innocuous; very few people outside of watch lovers know the brand. The movement is stunning and visually fascinating. I don't like that it is yet another white dialed, blue handed watch. What I mean is that it lacks some of the intrigue that a more unusual watch has (read, the 5146). I do have a Breguet which, by that very simple criteria, is visually similar (guilloche dial, blued hands).

Please, don't add other watches to the suggestion box or variations of these: I know they come with different dials. This is more about contrasting these two. Which would you chose and why? What contrasting points to do you have between the two?

Thank you in advance,

-Paul

I prefer the Souverain here. If the Octa Calendrier is an option for an AC then I really like that Journe.

I like the Journe much more, out of the box, beautiful hands. The dial from the Patek is too much cluttered imho

The Journe for sure- ive owned the 5146 in rose gold/slate dial and i got tired of it quickly not to mention some issues with the movement. Also, that massive rotor really gets in the way when you want to admire the movement. Journes movement is chronometrically superior and the twin barrel working in parallel for a more stable power is a neat solution.

That being said, both watches are good choices However, one thing to bring your attention to is, unlike the Breguet, Journe stamps the guilloche and is not engine turned.

Journe with that Latin saying is really stylish and not cluttered.

Between those two, I much prefer the Journe.
Although the Patek has more complications, as far as looks, the Journe is much nicer.

FPJ for me. I don't like the dial layout of the 5146.

I don't really know much about either, but on looks alone I prefer the Journe.

FPJ. Not a big fan of calendar complications.

Solves the “white dial, blues hands” concern!

FPJ seems the clear winner and gets my vote too :)

I'm fortunate enough to be an owner of both brands so I do appreciate them both... but in respect to these 2 models, the FPJ CS is a clear winner. And yes, the Black Labels are special so that would be even better.

Journe for me, I newly acquired one, it is lovely, couldn’t be more satisfied.
From reading your post, I see Journe has more pros.
And the TRF folks have also voted for Journe.

At the end it is your decision, hope you’ll wear it in good health.

Based on looks alone, I prefer the Journe and the quality is better. The Patek adds an annual calendar and moonphase, which are nice complications to have, but I'm not a fan of the date window, especially with the dark dial. I'd get the Journe and save your Patek slot for something more special.

The CS for me, but I'm heavily biased towards FPJ and general look/style/design of his watches.

Of course the 5146, which imo is somewhat jaded / dated in its design, offers more functionality and if that's of value to you then it's really not a fair comparison.

Of the two choice it is the Journe for me. I like the dial and it appears it will be more legible.

Wow! Thanks everyone! I did not think it would be so one sided.

For those that did not like the comparison, I've very sorry that my personal journey did not meet your expectations.

The one thing that really stands out is MJaber comment about the dial being stamped: I had no idea so thank you for the information. As I have not seen one in person, would you say that there is much of a difference in dial quality versus a Breguet?

Never seen an FPJ in the flesh - but judging by the photo it looks every bit as good as a turned Breguet dial.

Of those 2 watches, for me, as per the majority of replies, the FPJ would take it...the shape of the hands is really unique how they curve and decrease in thickness.

Beautiful and elegant watch.

I have seen the FPZj in person many times and would have never known the guilloche was stamped if I didn’t know it (and I can confirm it is stamped). The key to the dial is the blue hands and layout more so than stamped vs engine turned.

While an engine turned dial using antique equipment is a nice idea and a nice bonus, in practice the stamped dial is likely just as good. I have a stamped dial on my 2000s Chronoswiss and it's lovely and of superb quality. I would imagine the Journe dial would be just as good or better.

Journe as well here, but there's something kind of fun and special about a Patek. Maybe a different Patek down the road will suit you better.
