SS AP messi
Contemplating on pulling a trigger on one. Is it worth the price for a royal oak LE or is the Patek 5711 a better buy? Thanks guys

Two different watches – one’s a simple 3-hander, the other is a chronograph… which do YOU prefer?
Arguably the tantalum bezel and 500-pieces means there are less of those than there are 5711s knocking about, but it’s the latter which is currently more sought after – although who knows how long that’ll remain the case. Just go with whichever really lights up your eyes, and enjoy it. |

I love the Messi edition but I agree with PJ S. In the end, buy what you like. Both are not terribly easy to get but I personally prefer a chronograph. I am also slightly biased owning a ROC.

The Messi is rarer and more interestingly constructed so I would pick that one if you are on the fence.

Probably the coolest ROC, not a big chrono fan, but that's a very nice chrono

The question is, which Messi LE are you after?

Messi is rare but I wold rather have a 5711, now if you have an aquanaut or another simple three hand from Patek then I would do Messi

I would take the Messi. Haven't seen one in person, how's the brushed dial on it? It must look great in the sunlight.

I may be flamed here, but I would never purchase a watch with the name of a soccer player on it, no matter how awesome the watch looks (and of course this specific LE looks pretty cool). Also, imho part of the ROs and ROCs ‘soul’ lies in the tapisserie dial, which the Messi model lacks. As much as AP continues to innovate and put great new products on the market, to me the 15202ST still holds ground as the nicest AP to own.
As to the comparison with 5711, well... To me the white 5711 is one the most interesting, subtle, understated and stunning watches, so I would certainly favor it over virtually any other pieces out there. |

As to nicknames, I fine with them - the 'garage door' has actually been growing in popularity and its value in auctions just confirms this - other nicknames as the Elephant, Smurf, Hulk do not bother me either. I certainly prefer this to wearing a watch with a sportsman name. In collecting watches, diversity and respect are (or should be) the name of the game. |

Thanks, Arnaud. I just found that 'toilet seat' was a bit too much. But, again, it's ok. Some will prefer the garage doors, smurfs, elephants and the like, while others prefer the name of their favorite athletes (in the hope that they will continue to be venerable to the point of having their names attached to the high-value pieces we carry on our wrists). I am a happy member of the first group.

Really like the Messi, however it has a 50m WR, the lower water resistance is a big minus for me.
https://www.hodinkee.com/articles/ha...e-pics-pricing Blue 5711 is a winner.

5711 may not be named after a celebrity but it does have a very famous name on its dial nonetheless
Some may find celebrity special editions gauche but who cares? Rolex still pays athletes to wear its watches, even if it stops short of engraving "Federer" on a case back It's not just AP, RM and Hublot -- Even Seiko has a Djokovic branded LE. Doesn't stop me from enjoying the watches |
