Split Seconds PCC

Hi,

I’ve been thinking about a split seconds perpetual calendar chrono.

Just trying to gauge peoples thoughts on the 5004P vs the 5204P in terms of production numbers and longer term desirability.

Just glancing at the prices, it looks like the 5004P has the slight edge. It may be because it was discontinued. Personally, I like the arabic dial of the 5004 better.

5004 was produced in smaller numbers than the 5204 for sure. However proportions (diameter vs thickness) are better with the 5204.

Indeed, the struggle in my mind is the lower numbers produced in the 5004 vs the small case. I’m just not sure I’d wear it much.

If you are buying to keep it in the safe and sell in the future, get the 5004. If you want to wear it, get the 5204.

Things must be good in old Speldhurst, never heard of it myself. 5204p black on strap would be my choice. Do you like the bracelet?

I cannot stand the "depression" in the bottom of the tach scale on the 5204...drives me crazy so 5004 for me

This is why I love the 5370p...perfect all around

I assume you already have stuff like 5370P and 5970P? Otherwise I would be tempted to look that way.

I was tempted by the 5370p. But after seeing a friend struggling to get out of his at a £50k hit from retail I got cold feet and figured why not go perpetual calendar and split seconds.

Get your friends piece and then wait until it is discontinued in the very near future.

From a value standpoint the 5004 is the way to go. I have seen a few 5204 at some really interesting but hard to believe prices. They are soft for whatever reason, especially the R.

I personally prefer the looks of the 5004P and I'm fine with the smaller size but it depends on your wrist size.

I know. I saw one, basically new, at an on-line seller at a crazy big discount from MSRP and it did not sell that quickly. This segment of the watch market is really under a lot of pressure. I think the MSRPs on the Grand Complications just got too high and they are being repriced more efficiently and correctly on the aftermarket. Sort of the reverse from the SS sports models.

This is absolutely the correct answer.

The two watches have little in common. Technically, the 5204 is superlative. As an iconic piece, the 5004 is on its own shelf.

All of the watches using the 29-535 caliber are soft versus retail, which is to say all PP chronos from the Thierry era.

By percentage, residual value on a 27-70 based chrono is much stronger than 29-535. My hunch is, if you are looking for value and not just pleasure from wearing the watch, look for something from Michael Ovitz or Eric Claption provenance.
