I’m thinking you have to take in more than that Bas… Well at least on your training days?

Training days yes, but this is just a regular day intake.

During a half marathon I already drink a litre of water in normal, not too hot, weather.

I don't have much issues with drinking water during training, except for very long runs (marathon distance and up) in hot weather. I always get nauseous, don't drink enough because of it and then lose strength because I didn't drink enough... This is one of the struggles that is keeping me in that 50mile maximum distance, still haven't done the 100k and 100miles yet..

I don't track it, but if I had to guess, I am probably around:

1 gallon/day on rest days
1.5 gallons/day on days I work out

I get it… Nutrition is half the struggle for endurance athletes. Dialing it in is a lot of trial and error. I’ve actually over hydrated at a half Ironman and had to stop every 10 minutes at the Porta potty… LOL

I actually don't drink much water during runs, maybe 8oz during a 10 mile run, even in the dead of summer in FL. But I probably get a gallon in for the rest of the day. On the days I don't run it's probably just shy of gallon.

I've seen guys having an emergency and diarrhea everywhere during ultramarathons, not pretty. Sucks, because you're there to have a good time as well..

There is no one plan fits all, drinking and eating during exercise does not come naturally, you have to train this as well. For some it's easy and for others it is the biggest struggle.

In the same way Cola is a liquid, yeah

My wife likes to freeze some fruit berries, then she'll put a few of the frozen berries in a jug of water. It makes for a very pleasant natural fruit flavoured water that she and the kids drink all day. Strawberries, raspberries, blueberries, summer fruits.. I can drink lots of that on a warm day..

Is this a US or UK gallon? A UK gallon is 8 pints (roughly 4 litres). That’d make me pee about 40 times.

Easily a gallon
2 (24oz) at my am CrossFit type class. Then I fill a 30oz yeti multiple times throughout the day. Usually get a 3-5 mile run in around lunch too so come back real thirsty.

Well over. Probably closer to two gallons.

On the weekends my liquid intake is supplemented by red wine.

If I don't drink adequate water in the day, I develop a legitimate brain fog, sometimes accompanied by headaches as well. Drinking enough water is one of the most commonly overlooked 'easy fixes' for minor ailments. Which is so funny as it should be blatantly obvious considering basic biology and our makeup.

When I was an outdoor instructor, I used to drink tons of water. That was the mantra -- drink as much water as possible so that your urine is always clear. In more recent years, I realized that didn't make sense. Now I drink only when I'm thirsty. I don't overhydrate. But I also don't wait until I'm dehydrated to prevent short-term mood and cognitive impairment (as dmash mentioned). When I run/exercise, I find that I don't tend to want or need as much water (or food) as most other people. I can run 16+ miles without any water as long as it's not super hot out (though I know that's not good for me and I try not to do that -- but with COVID, all the water fountains are shut off!).

Water is also my favorite beverage. I probably drink a different beverage (juice, coffee or tea with tons of cream and sugar, tea, smoothie, etc.) maybe once every other day, just for variety.

I live in a warm/hot climate and I have never encountered anyone who drinks that much liquid daily (excepting labourers working outside in the heat and athletes engaging in prolonged strenuous physical activity)
My GP suggests between 2 and 3 litres a day is more than enough for sedentary people.
I drink 2 litres (< 1/2 Gal.)per day and that seems to work well for a 68 yo sedentary 60kg (140 lb) male.
I would suggest that like all generalisations, it needs to be tempered with reference to many other variables including age, weight, activity levels, climate, food intake etc.
It seems to me that a good guide would be whether you are urinating frequently - like every hour. If so, surely that suggests that your body does not need the amount of water ingested, sure, you are "flushing your kidneys" but is that volume of water necessary to achieve that?

+1

Everything in moderation. There is no benefit to over-hydrating and risking water intoxication.

I can consume up to 1.5 gallons but only on days when I ride very long distances and in immense heat. On normal days, max of 2 liters is sufficient and that includes green tea.

Ha! Good one, Clive.
I remember when the "water thing" first hit about 15-20 years ago and everybody started carrying water bottles everywhere. I was like "Seriously? You're never more than 10 metres from a tap".
I used to see other walkers on my morning walk with their litre bottles of water. How seriously dehydrated can you get if you have a good drink before you go and another when you return?
There was one guy who couldn't sit through an hour long meeting without drinking a bottle of water and excusing himself to go to the toilet a couple of times.

The 'water thing', is it mostly just marketing?
What a great business to be in, selling water.

Can't help wondering how bemused the Beduoin, Tuareg, Bejas, Australian Aboriginal Peoples and others that have survived in arrid parts of our planet for millenia, would make of we, 'modern' people carrying bottles of water around in our mostly, temperate, cosseted lives?

I expect they might just ponder, the sheer indulgent luxury of it all.

Perhaps us tea, coffee and alcohol consumers, athletes and labourers, do need to rehydrate regularly.
But, as for most of us, just getting up, going to work and walking about a bit, we probably get all the water we need with a normal balanced diet, don't we?

The whole 'water thing' is just a marketing driven fad, isn't it?

Fancy a 'swift half', anyone?
