As a KV snd FPJ owner already i debate the same thought myself. Roger Smith Series 4 or Open Work but its a bit like buying a Daniels or Breguet and not sure i like the pocket watch type movement. The attraction is the complete inhouse manufacture and small production.Forsey yes but size does nothing for me. Like my watches at 40mm. The brand for finish abd innovation. Bovet intrigues me as i like the artisinal nature and its not on the radar....all things equal it will be a RWS

I was just at GF event last month. Stephen is a really nice guy and for all the impeccable finishes, like you said, those watches are just big.

But I still might buy the GMT eventually.

I have been drawn to the design of the IWC 5001-09 but have been told by two AD’s that the servicing of this brand is not very good particularly in Oz.

Anyone care to comment on this?

While great looking watches and I love them. Not independent. GO is part of Swatch group.

The independent I would look at in Glashüette is Nomos. And probably the manual wind Metro or Club.

Would you not go for Moritz Grossmann, or is your choice purely based on a set budget?

I've looked at and tried on FPJ, GF, RM, Urwerk, Laurent Ferrier and MB&F. Each has its own niche market, but MB&F seems to most interesting with some unique pieces at their MAD Gallery in Geneva.

I like fairly traditional watches so FPJ and Laurent Ferrier.

Agree on Habring

I do also respect Habring. For a husband and wife team to rapidly introduce complications like a rattrapante is impressive.
Any other brand on this thread that is halfway affordable, as well as, independent?

Affordable is relative. But I’d look at Nomos and Habring.

Vacheron Constantin isn’t an I dependent company — haven’t been for over 30 years, since Richemont acquired it.

If you like MBF, maybe you should see a Romain Gauthier "Logical One" in flesh, its mesmerising (the picture below doesn't even do justice to the watch)

You could be even more patriotic and choose another 100% British watchmaker but I dont blame you, GF have stunning models

Speaking of British watchmaking, please add Struthers to the list! They are lovely watches made by nice people. They are currently working on their initial run using their in-house movement. Will be awesome, no doubt.

I didn't, but the MB&F wasn't on my list--that''s too thick to wear!

Frankly, for a time-only watch, the 14mm RWS series 2 is pushing it! Still doable, but the RG log1 is too much-although otherwise a great watch, having seen it in the metal.

FPJ excels at wearable watches, for example, and that makes a big difference.

In the affordable range, I believe that Maurice Lacroix is independent still.

No mention yet of Stepan Sarpaneva. He makes pretty interesting watches.

ML is not independent, they’re owned by a holding group (DKSH) who put it up for sale in 2015. Glycine was also theirs, which is now under Invicta ownership.

Ah...too bad. I've never been in love with their aesthetic, but they do certainly have a unique look. Thanks for the correction!

Cheers
