2 other watch brands you would be happy with if Rolex & Patek where off the table?
what would be your choice besides Rolex and Patek for
1 Sport 1 Dress sport: Grand Seiko has been more and more compelling as a versatile do anything go anywhere sports watch, equal in build quality to rolex yet meaningfully under the radar for all of the is it safe concerns. There is a satisfying power to answering a stangers question "what kind of watch are you wearing" by responding "seiko" and letting the conversation fade away when the circumstances dictate. my GS is actually a dress watch so i am speaking from a position of admiration, though it has a dressy look, the 305 would be a wonderful choice for the sports model, proper water resistance and build quality, i would where it without thought to any activity dress: FP Journe has also become more and more compelling for his fascinating design choices while respecting the classic proportions of a dress watch. especially regarding the thickness of the case. many offerings do not have regard for the beauty and elegance of being able to slide under a shirt cuff. the FP Journe Chrono Bleu has become my favorite watch. what are your choices?

Sport = Blancpain or AP
Dress = FPJ (one day I’ll have my CB). I’ll admit though, that I’m no fan of Patek and I’d choose a plethora of other brands over them anyway (FPJ, Moser, Laurent ferrier , ALS, Breguet).

Sport: Omega. They are equal to Rolex in quality and superior to them in innovation. It's also nice that Omegas are readily available and less than half the price of Rolex in terms of street pricing, although this is also reflected in Omega's lower resale prices and 2nd place status among the general public. I do, however, think Omega makes too many variations of its watches, releases too many "special editions", and uses fauxtina too much. They could learn from Rolex but it would be nice if Rolex followed Omega's lead in some respects as well, at least from a consumer's perspective.
Dress: ALS followed by VC followed by JLC. These days, Patek's finishing on most watches is about on par with JLC's but their street prices, and I'm not just talking about the Nautilus and Aquanaut. dwarf JLCs are and at least 30-50% more than ALS and VC, the former of which simply embarrasses Patek. At this point, I really don't see another new Patek in my future. Note that I currently own or have owned in the past at least two watches from every brand listed above. |

AP for sports - for me the perfect balance between high end horology and functional practicality.
For dress - ALS. The pinnacle of understated quality.

Grand Seiko has a lot of the Rolex/Patek offerings covered. If GS was the only brand available I’d be happy. Also zenith, Panerai, Blancpain, even Tag Heuer offer watches that would complete me.

For dress I would go with A. Lange & Sohne (my personal grail). For sport I already traded out my GMT Master II for a Grand Seiko Spring Drive GMT as I personally found it superior. So I guess, one down one to go!

For alternative dress watches, I really like Lange, FPJ, and Laurent Ferrier. For sports watches, I’ve never been terribly fond of anything non Rolex or Patek

ALS- have a Lange 1, and good chance I will go for an 1815 up/down in the next 1-2 yrs
AP- ideally would find a nice pre owned 15300, but also would consider 15202 or 15450 Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Pro |
