Icon20 FHB confirms - Pre owned & In house chronograph

Skip to 09:30 minutes for the best bits.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p5YodO_iNZ0

Main headlines from the Interview...

New line confirmed for 2019. In house chronograph will be amongst the new releases. New line will displace some RO volumes until 2020 when the 40.000 annual watch volume will be increased.

Following this, AP confirm ambition to move to certified pre-owned..minimum 2 year in house warranty. AP also plans to run own auctions for rare pieces.

FHB isn't drawn on pre-owned pricing strategy, but does indicate there will be fluctuations based on availability and demand, so there would presumably be somewhat dynamic market pricing which makes sense. Transparency will be key for AP on pricing.

If AP control both new & a significant portion of pre-owned, this could be very effective at cutting out any unscrupulous practises around hot pieces.

Exciting things on the horizon !

AP has been teasing about the in-house chronograph for well over 10 years. There was an interview in 2016 where FHB said it would be released within 2 years.

He confirms much more...saying the new line and calibres are already completed and being tested at the HQ.

Whilst overall output might be slightly higher as is mentioned, given the development of the product offering, I do not think it is fair to see as a pure increase in production per se. For example, with AP having been successful in growing the women's category, the men's category has de facto seen reduced production. Perhaps this will remain and the sales demand of the new product line will represent the full increase in production. Given that PP's production is rumoured to be more or less twice AP's, I still see AP's positioning as relatively attractive in the segment.

in theory yes but AP struggled to handle the increased production of describing the new models correctly on their website and screwing in the bezels of watches they were exhibiting. More watches and the very real possibility of major QC issues as they are a bit behind the ball already.

Pretty sure PP is not double AP, last i heard it was marginally more.

In any case AP or PP or whoever i think making more watches devalues the brand to some extent. There is value for the customer (maybe not the business owner) of being smaller. The more watches they make the less special they are as i enjoy the fact that i dont come across many AP's in the wild. Its the single worst thing about Rolex, admittedly that is on an entirely different scale.

so now the question: will the current ROC go the way of the zenith daytona?
cuz i have been eyeing 26320, and curious if this old stock will drop or rise after the new inhouse chrono is released.

I doubt it. The older ROOs with the JLC movement as the base caliber haven't risen in value - in fact they've become harder to move these days as they age.

then could be equally 'positive' for me in that prices will be better for me to acquire.

Are the 26320's screwdown pushers for the chrono?

No they are not. They look like screw down, but they are not. They updated that the past year.

26320 is the pre-2017 reference that did have screw down pushers. It was the 26331 where they changed them to non-screw down.

The designs of the new ROCs are a big hit so if these are kept then the old models might suffer, so a lot depends on the aesthetic. The previous gen of 42 ROOs, Panda, Original Safari, RG RC etc were more popular than the current crop.

Thanks guys, wanted to be sure. 26320 and 26331 pushers looked the same to me from pictures.

Interview made it sound like in house chrono is going to the new line and not the ROC.

I have serious doubts but who knows. Very few APs go up in value over time. Not the end of the world just the truth.
