Well this answers my question by the looks of it.
My thoughts entirely Shaky,

I helped him sell his mint unfired stainless Colt Python for several thousand $$$. He has a lot of “stuff.”
He sounds a great guy to know, it would be worth offering to help appraise the items in the draw... it may be that he may find tasks like this daunting, such a great find, all the very best "H"

I have spotted vintage rolex on older gentlemen out in the wild a couple times before. The last time was last summer. He was wearing a 1675 from the early 70's, all original. I sparked up a convo about watches and he said he has had it since he bought it new in the 70's. He did not have box or papers.

I offered to buy it from him for a generous sum of cash and in the end he didn't want to part with it as he has been wearing it daily for years and the sentimental value was just too high.

Seems to be the trend when you find an original owner piece, they don't have the heart to get rid of it and really have no motivation of selling. Second time that happened to me.

He did however offer to sell me his wifes 80's two tone datejust. I politely passed.

The funny thing is we are amazed when we see stuff like this but if you think about it, it’s likely the majority of vintage watches live like this. Imagine how many thousands and thousands there are out there in drawers!

We live out our watches online with Instagram and forums and are all aware how much they’re worth. Think of your regular Joe that bought one in the 60’s/70’s and in their mind it’s still a Watch they paid $100 for. They’re non the wiser generally about values today and (as we see above) just chuck their old watches in a drawer when they get a newer ‘better’ Watch. They may never have even been online even, let alone seen a Watch forum.

Pretty cool when you think about what is laying out there.

Of course the movement could be trashed as well...crown not set properly, moisture getting in, which would mean it now really is junk. The guy sounds like a slob to me. Probably was enjoying your agony and lust. I wouldn't buy a watch from that kind of person unless my own watchmaker could inspect first...inside as well as out.

Nice MKI long E - probably earlier than '73, despite the engraving.

Well the good news is that he’s not trying to sell it to you so you can relax.

Agreed. I probably only know a couple of people who would understand what they found in that situation. I need to start raiding my friend's parents junk drawers.

What a great story. I am in the vintage mid century furniture biz and every once and a while I come across a watch wedged behind a drawer insert or the like in a dresser etc. Never anything super special yet though. The OP gives me hope :-). Thanks for sharing!

I spent a very long time searching for a 1973 GMT... Not sure the reason but evidently Rolex didn't make many Masters that year. They are so hard to find and the ones I have thought I found turned out to be 1972 or (to a lesser degree) 1974....

He received it in February of ‘73 so it too is probably a 1972 manufacture.

If that is his junk drawer, his safe probably houses a gas station snow globe, a half eaten Snickers and his favorite issue of Playboy.

You realize there are no serial numbers after 4.3 million up to 4.9 million - just service case serial numbers.
