Explorer 214270. Mk1 or Mk2???

So I am starting to get the Explorer itch. And I would like to hear which version TRF members prefer. As of now I am leaning more towards the Mk2. I feel like it is more sporty and truer to its original roots. My style is more sporty than dressy/classy. And I feel like the Mk1 is more classy because of the WG 3,6,9. But I feel like the 3,6,9 gets lost in the dial if that makes sense. And yes I get that the Mk1 will probably be more “collectible.” But collectibility is not factoring into my decision.

The MK1’s are significantly less expensive over the Mk2’s at this point. That could change in a few years but it seems that most people prefer the MK2s, at least for now.

It's Rolex Explorer not Explorer 1
Get the 0ne that appeals the most to your heart. My opinion doesn't matter and isn't important...

You don't want stubby hands. They fixed it with Mk2. Go with Mk2.

Had a MK 1 sold it for a Mk 2. In reality not that much difference but it makes me feel like it is just right now. The gold 3,6,9 vs lumed 3,6,9 formal/less formal thing really doesn't compute in reality. My vote is Mk2 any Rolex is collectible when it gets old some just more in demand than others. I wasn't going to hold on to my MK1 just in case.

I had a MK1 sold it, and after few years bought back a MK2

I prefer the MK2 longer and bolder hands and full lume on the 3 6 9 make it a better looking watch as compared the MK1

The short hands on the MK1 is not the fatal wound but rather the full gold 3 6 9 which in certain angle make it very difficult to read and not to mention without lume and it feels weird and retarded in the dark

I walked into a shop last year to compare my MK1 with the new MK2. I found the difference to be much less relevant than what I had seen on the pics on websites. I had expected to like the MK2 better (based on all the discussions here and elsewhere), but what happened was that I started to re-appreciate the MK1's more subtle appearance. The shorter hands didn't matter, in comparison. I agree that they are just a little bit too short, but then the minute hand of the MK2 is just a little bit too long (it overshoots). So what the heck, except that I just don't understand Rolex' design choices. But these unfathomable choices are part of the mystique I guess.

Mk1, the way the gold 3 6 9 play in the light is awesome.

MK1 all day long and I own both. The MK1 is going to be highly collectible get it now while it’s still affordable.

There are many threads on this topic. It always boils down to personal taste. There is no mathematical equation for which one is best for you. Try to find them both in the same shop and compare.

Another vote for MK2! There’s a reason why the MK2 was issued by Rolex.

Get an Air King if you like the WG 3-6-9. For the short hand, don’t buy into the rarity of it. Buy it because you like the short hand itself.

The Air King is a bigger thicker watch and not the icon the explorer is. That said the trio of Air King Milgauss Explorer would be a great collection!

i vote mk1. the new lumed 39mm explorer is just a bigger version of the original. the white gold numerals and shorter hands of the mk1 makes it stand apart. it's immediately identifiable as the first gen 39mm explorer. if i need to look at it twice just to see that it's slightly bigger than the original, it's failed to set itself apart as a different reference.

MK2 is back to the true roots of the Explorer and carries on the lineage of the 1016 original.

It is still the most versatile piece in the Rolex collection while fixing its proportions and going for a slightly sportier look.

I actually like the MK1 in pictures better but I've tried on the 36mm, 39mm MK1 and MK2. MK2>39mm>36mm for me.

Really, do you want a dressier piece or more of a sports watch? You can get a MK1 for a great price so if it's a really close decision then I would just go that route. For me, if I decide to go Explorer, it'll be the MK2.

You just can’t resist the AK! It may be thicker but it has a character that you either love it or hate it.
