They don't look that similar and trying to guess future values, well if you are right you can say you are a super genius if wrong no one will remember.

I opted for MK1 because I like the white gold 3-6-9 better. Shorter hands don't bother me.

Your call. Remember that if the short hands are an issue for you on the Mk1, Rolex will exchange them for the longer ones at service time, if you wish. So it comes down the lumed/non-lumed 3-6-9 ultimately.

RSC will only change the hands if you agree to change the dial as well. Its a package deal and not an individual option.

Mk.1 more white gold content. Mk.2 closer to the original Explorer. I'd pick the Mk.2.

I prefer the Mk1, classy and understated, but still casual.

At some point I will have to get my MK1 serviced. Tough call to decide about changing the hands + dial.. Absolutely unclear what I would decide!

I think the problem with the so-called Explorer Mk2 is that it now looks very similar to many other watches on the market.
The white gold 3-6-9 of the Mk1 sets it apart for sure.
The white gold also reflects well in certain low light conditions before luminosity kicks in.

Agree – the way I see it, the MK1's design shouldn't work but still does.

MK2 is much more balanced in my view. In addition to the lumed numbers, it has the longer hands. The shorter hands in MK1 is a big problem in my opinion.

I went MK2 don't regret the decision at all - it's bounced the GMTIIc as my daily. I did look at a MK1 first but the toolishness is certainly more noticeable to my eye .... my eyes are another consideration .... by the time I was able to appreciate (read afford comfortably) a Rolex my eyesight had waned considerably.... I can't enjoy the details with the naked eye, so the legibility of the MK2 was certainly a factor for me.... the WG numbers seemed to have a way of disappearing at the angle I actually read the time....which...I have to say, is the primary reason for wearing it.

Mk2?

I tried on the MK1 today, lovely watch however the hands are too small, i don't think they are too short rather that the size of the hands doesn't balance with the dial. Love the white gold but yes the numerals do disappear at certain angles, lume is more impressive on the MK2. If you can wear a 36mm just go with one of the older references like the 114270

I've said it before, and I'll say it again: if the first iteration of the 39mm Explorer had been with what we now call the Mk2 dial, we wouldn't be having this discussion.

There wouldn't be anything to compare it to if that were the case

MK2, had mine about six months now. Nicely balanced with the larger/lengthened hands, and the addition of the 3/6/9 lume is more pertinent to well, exploring...

Which one do you will be more collectible, MKI or MKII? MKI was produced between 2010 to 2016 (7 years) and MKII was produced between 2016 to 2021 (6 years). Rolex started to cut down its sport watches production after 2016?? I heard MKI will be more collectible, but I don’t understand it. I am a Rolex newbie. I wanted the MKII, but bought a MKI instead. I am thinking selling my MKI for buying a MKII. Any thought on which one will keep better value in the future? Thanks.

Does Rolex USA change MKI dial and hands to MKII’s? If they do, do they keep the MKI dial and hands? I had a black dial 42mm Explorer II and asked Rolex USA if I could change the black dial to a polar white one. They told me they don’t change dial for sport watches due to the complexity of their movement. Any idea if they would change a MKI to a MKII? Thanks.

MK1 - you can't make out the 3-6-9 when it goes "Dark" depending on the angle of light. This white gold 3-6-9 is now recycled for use on the AirKing...

The hands is stunted and short not in proportion to the case and dial in 39mm. If not wrong Rolex re-cycled the hands from the 114270 stocks - probably they have a lot in factory stockpile (i.e. the 36mm Explorer)

MK1 never really took off that is why Rolex made a MK2 improvement

You’re implying that Rolex used leftover hands from the 114270 for seven years?? I don’t think Rolex made a mistake that they identified after seven years and hundreds of thousands of watches. They make adjustments and modifications all the time. Some people prefer full lume at 3-6-9 while others prefer white gold. I doubt anybody with white gold markers at 6pm had problems figuring out what time it was.

MK1 was produced for 6 years. MK2 was produced for 5 years!

With your own logic..MK2 never took off either so Rolex killed it and made 36mm Explorer!

Rolex made a mistake and it took them 11 years to correct it, as we see a new 36mm Explorer back in the lineup.
It usually takes a long time for stubborn people to acknowledge their failures..
