The original Panerai concept, back in the 1940's, for a long power reserve was to reduce wear on the winding mechanism.

This would imply that it was expected that the watch would be wound perhaps once a week, rather than the standard once a day. However, accuracy in the 40's was not what it is today and the timing for a fully wound watch would be far different than one after a few days of running.

Today it is likely more of a gimmick than an actual necessity.

My concern with an 8 day reserve, and 3 mainsprings and barrels, is that if you wind it every day, the back spring-sets would never be "exercised". I would experiment with winding once a week, or use the power indicator as a fuel-gauge, just like any other.

Me personally would let it run all the way down. I own a p3000 and usually wind it every other day or so

I wait until it stops or I see it lost an hour. If I wind it on a Sunday, I usually have to wind it the following Wednesday, then the following Saturday.

Agree with others about using all of the 8 day reserve.
On my 317, I find the PR indicator critical.

Using all 8d of PR, rather than winding once a week (every 7d) would reduce wear on the winding mechanism.

With 8d watches without PR indicators, would be hard to keep track of 8d intervals if rotating watches.
Find it odd not to have PR indicators on all manual wind 8d models.

I don’t have a specific rotation for my watches.. whatever I feel for long as I feel (usually a week at most lol),

so the 8day Pam gets fresh wind when I put first put it on.. and maybe another full wind few days later.

The 3day Pam gets fresh wind for its wrist-time rotation, plus full wind couple of days later.

I don’t want it to run out of PR when I am wearing it.
But both movements wind down all the way during their time in the vault.

I wind my Pam233 every day just because I love winding that watch, it's so satisfying, smooth, and wonderful clicking sound. But now that I read some of the comments that the other barrels should wind down as well, and it makes sense to me, I will try to resist winding it for a week. Boy I can see that being tough on me

Same here, I wind my 510 everyday when its in rotation. But its nice that I have the option not to do that.

Part of the enjoying of owning a manual wind is the winding part of it. If I don't like to wind it up, then I would just get an automatic. :)

I wind my 233 every sunday.. so it completes the rotation and the pr indicator shows one more day..

I fully wind it before wearing it then let it fully wind down. Once it stops that's usually my que to switch watches.

I am equally confused by the OP's question.

WHY would you NOT utilize the power reserve? Winding it daily will just accelerate wear and tear, i would think....

If someone knows otherwise, I'd love to hear it....
