later crown up or not ?

Dear RWF,

First of all I thank you for existing! It was very useful for Me to read this fantastic forum before buying my first Rolex (Explorer 1 39 mm) and now I have my first thread on this Forum... I noticed that on all official pictures of Rolex usually the Rolex crown on the lateral screw (I apologize but I don't know the technical word for it in English) the crown is totallt straight with the little line under it totally horizontal while in mine when I close it (hard) the crown is heading towards 12 O'clock (upwords) and the line is not 100% horizontal.. Now my doubt is : The crown on the later screw must be straight or It does not matter at all and is just an Image thing when the have to take their pictures for adv ? Or may be I should use less strength when closing it in order to have the crown totally straight (no problem for water??) or I already broke my watch (steel should be hard material though) because I used too much strenght and now I find the crown not straight ??

May be I'm just wondering on a stupid thing without any importance @ all but I preferer asking to you.... Crown straight or not straight ?

I thank you in advance for your cooperation !!

Please let me know what you think...Thank you folks

Bye

They are all different and it has no bearing on the functioning of your watch. Congrats on the Explorer!

If the crown is straight the watch is worth 500usd more...
No just kidding... the position of the crown is totally random and it will vary a little depending on how tight and worn out the rubber seals are...
If you want it perfect for pictures screw it in or out a little bit... that seems to be the trick

So mine is not broken !!!! I thought that I might screwed too much and got the CROWN not right because I thought It must be straight but from what I read from your posts and the ones on the link you kindly sent Me my watch is fine, that is a great news because I'm really totally in love with it! I don't understand only one thing.. But if I ever wanted my crown facing straight up when totally screwed and sealed from the water is there any chance that I can bring my watch to my AD to have it fixed or my watch will always be this way ?

I must admit that at first was not easy for a Rolex newbie like me to understand when the crown was totally screwed or not (fearing that water would get inside my lovely watch......) Do you have any secret to understand when is screwed enough to avoid water getting in? because my crown is straight when screwed in a way that i believe OK but then when I use ALL my streght the crown is not straight but slightly lateral.. I'm wondering on the fact that probably I don't have to use so much strenght and therefore my crown could still be facing up protecting my Rolex from the water but it is not easy to understand when is screwed enough...

Rolex forum I really thank you for your great help!

Only chance to get one with the crown pointing up is to find one that comes like that and buy it.. But once it is serviced, it could come back screwing different and the crown pointing in other direction.. So why worry about it...

Yes, I must admit that I'm very happy that my watch is fine because at the beginning I really thought that I got some problems on my crown due to my strenght but it was weird because I'm not the incredible hulk.. Rolex official pics are a kind of confusion because it seems that the crown MUST be that way.....

From what I've understood nobody has the crown pointed to the same direction for the whole life of his watch because when it gets serviced changes everytime ?

I love my Explorer 39mm, totally in love with it.. Elegant but at the same time sporty and understated.. AMORE!

Welcome to the forum and congrats on your new Explorer!!!! Don't worry about the crown--as long as the hand point in the right direction-all is fine!!!! Enjoy your watch!!

They all will change over time.

The position of the crown changes over time as the gaskets compress. Even if you had the crown aligned to be straight, it would not stay that way. Also, I do not recommend that you tighten the crown with all your strength, as that could compress the gaskets too much. Just tighten the crown snugly.

For the prices Rolex charges, they should take the extra time during assembly to have the crown point straight up as featured in their advertisements. Also, they should come back from RSC service aligned straight up as well.
