quick question? when is your end game

hello again

i recently done a thread asking do you realise how much your collection is worth in this bubble

look i know some people collect as they love watches which we all set out as, then we see what what some pieces are worth etc

so as the thread says, when is your end game, sell all pieces etc and be happy, sell 1 to cover all

over to you

heads up no right or wrong answers lets just be honest

i know what i would do

Truthfully, if 1 of my watch collection paid for the rest, and I would be more than happy with then I'm done
.
Or if all of the others paid for that 1 watch then exactly the same

Well, but consolidating all into one is a lot different than selling something which appreciated (a lot) to cover the cost of everything else. It's difficult to imagine how you would be equally satisfied with either scenario.

When faced with this before, I've arrived at the conclusion that going down to one or two would make me miss some of my pieces too much, even if those 1 or 2 were very special. I try, however, to keep the number relatively small and have done some consolidating as of late, especially to use this crazy current market in my favor.

It is like asking what is your grail watch. If you have a goal and you reach it, you then set a higher goal and it keeps on going up. For some, it starts off as getting a 5711/1Aand then may go to a PCC and then an enamel dial WT, etc.

Ah. But then how can the end game be either 1 piece or many "for free"? I understand the $$ aspect of that, but have trouble with the collecting logic behind the "either or is equally fine" scenario.

All I know is once you get to certain age you realise life is for the here and now, you stop thinking about trading a 5711 now @100k or that in a year it could be 200k in 5 it could be 500k or in a month it could be MSRP.

No you come to realise that every day you wake up is a really good day, so you make each day count and live life to the full.

So you want to go to one watch, is that what you are saying? Is that your endgame as long as you come out even?

Well. Bob, if u don't mind me calling u by your 1st name

I have my grail or unicorn, and if I'm honest I look at the figures of it, and it frightens me, so it was a general?

But truthfully I'd hate to lose money,, who honestly would?

Having an “end game” is too much pressure and takes the fun out of this hobby. IMHO. Do I have a grail? Sure. Is it my “end game” ? Prob not .

I am actually quite happy w the few pieces I have got. So far I have been traveling through life w few assets and in all honesty I am prob not much of a collector of anything. I just like to surround myself w some nice kit, watches included, and within my means I prefer quality over quantity in any category.

I am not planning on selling anything (irrespective of price trends) as I very much like what I have got and I don't have any uber-expensive grail I am working towards. Just two more hard-to-get pieces that may or may not come through at the AD and one (military) diver from the 1980s if I find a mint one.

Truth be told where I am at may be my end game already (in terms of watches)...

Not really end pieces in the grail sense for you guys, feels more like (very) nice to have for me. Might well be here had I jumped right after Basel 2018 rather than one year late, 5968 and 5740. If and when it happens great, no big deal if it doesn't any time soon. IWC Ocean 2000 BUND military diver is the last one, prob not gonna happen at all as very very rare in good condition (all automatic variants anyway).

What if I just want to own, wear and enjoy my watches?

What are you asking again?

Well, I don't know about end game per se. The bar seems to keep getting higher and further every time I buy a new Patek.

I remember when I got my first, a 3919j, 20 years ago - I thought that was my end game. But then came a 5015r, a 5035r...and then a long 15 year pause, figured I'd finally gotten off the crack.

But times change, interests evolve. Recently I sold all those and a few JLC's I had also (all at a profit, thankfully), turned around and got a 5205r and a 5227r. All the sudden, after a 15 year hiatus, I wanted a bigger, more modern size.

Now perhaps a 5196g could be next (thanks to Mr. Fat_ninja - like a drug pusher, his 5196 posts might have tipped me back onto the crack...).

So end game? Not so sure about that, maybe once an addict, always an addict, only in remission every now and then.
