Man, this kid's comments really touched a nerve with some people! It's interesting to see all the reactions from this kind of incident.

I feel fully prepared to know what to wear to amusement parks and family reunions!

I'm going to a family reunion tomorrow. I wasn't going to wear my Rolex since it might offend my poor relatives. Now, I'm thinking I should wear it so that if they comment on it, I can put them in their place.

Wait, where was your man servant to handle this? Nigel would never let that sort of fracas in my space.

I was called out by a random coworker in a group setting years ago. I just responded with “it’s a Chinese knock-off” and ended there. There was another coworker who knew I was into watches, he kept quiet and gave me a nod and smirk.

You can’t control what people say or do, but you can come up with crafty responses to diffuse the situation.

In September last year my wife and I did a South African/Zimbabwe/Botswana game drive experience over 12 days.
On day 4 or so, we attended a cultural night near Kruger National Park where we were guests of one of the villages. You can imagine what it was like, fire, dancing, singing and food...... Anyway the bus came to pick us up around 9:00pm and by that stage 20-30 young kids circled the bus.
As my wife and I were getting close to the bus, this little boy, probably 10 or 11 asks, "Mister, Mister, Can I have your Rolex?" I was naturally a bit taken back by that and said "No son it's not a Rolex its an Invicta." His shoulders dropped and said "Oh..... can I have it anyway?" I said no but you can have a dollar for knowing what a Rolex is!
Cheers!

It seems that manners are an option today. Many act like they were brought up in a cave by wolves.

I suppose you could have educated him and informed him that these watches are actually worth more than you pay retail. That might have blown his young mind

I personally wouldn't tell someone else my real watch is a fake. That sends another message to the person about yourself IMO.

But I agree there are ways to diffuse unwanted attention in certain settings

I would have said this watch is worth more than what you'll make for the next 4 summers. Have fun :)

Then walk away :)

Snide or rude comments always get the same in return from me. Doesn't matter if someone is richer or poorer than me. If one can give it, then one can receive it too.

He is a boy, he can say what he wants without anyone having to grab him by the neck or take him to the manager to scold him ... you tell him: you are right and thank you, it must be the same with the purchase of an iphone .. ... only idiots are offended by a child's comments.

Read half of the comments, but he is just a kid, cut him some slack. Don’t you remember ever saying stupid stuff to someone? I remember when I was a kid and these new homes went up around from my house , a moved in and owned a Lamborghini. I had been reading about Fiero conversions to Lambo’s and innocently asked him if it was a kit car (the house did not go with the car). I could tell he was upset by the comment, but it was innocent, albeit rude looking back. Point is, let it slide, sort of not worth even mentioning.
