It's definitely a nice watch, but I am not a big of the blue dial and bezel insert on white metal and gold gets dinged so easily. My goal is SD43. Nice photos in this thread by the way.

I love the Smurf. When my eyes get worse and I cannot read the time on my Platona, I'm trading it in for the Smurf. When I told this to the wife, she said over her dead body.

Great post, OP. I truly feel everyone should feel this way about a watch they own!

You're right. People can put F.P. Journes, Pateks, really anything in front of me, and I'll always pick the Smurf. It's the best watch out there. The #2 watch is a much more difficult one for me to decide on.

Top sports Rolex for me:
1) Smurf [only nickname I like using for a watch btw) 2) SD50

Sorry, but you probably couldn't pay me to wear a gold sport watch, and it's not a great shade of blue IMO. Assuming I couldn't immediately sell the Smurf, I'd pick a steel Sub over it if given the choice to pick one for free. If I was going to spend that much on a Sub, I'd get a vintage one. How is that for a differing opinion!

That is why we have freedom of speech. Everyone gets to have an opinion, and the world is better when there are a variety of opinions.

This is a great post and YES I have slowly been coming to the conclusion that this is the ultimate sports watch. It is the only watch I would trade my green sub for. My only issue, and the only concern I have is one you already mentioned. I like to use the watch or at least have the capability to use it for what is is designed for. That is what a tool watch is and what makes Rolex so special - the ability to combine tool with luxury, usability with durability, comfort and presence. It balances all of those things so well. I would like to know that I CAN wear a Blue Sub while diving without worrying, not because of the waterproofness of course, its the same watch after all, but if white gold can hold up to 1. EVERYDAY wearability (can it be a daily wear?) 2. Tool watch - Can I wear it everywhere I wearthe SS sub? Can I dive with it, or is it purely a luxury watch? Will the WG hold up?
When it comes to the sports line I want to to be able to be used for intended purposes and this is the only thing that holds me back. I would really be interested in what the owners have to say on this beautiful piece. OP your watch looks stunning! |

The blue is perfect as it is, sunburst is fine for TT and YG but the Smurf is a whole different level of awesome. While not in my top five grail watches, it's definitely my grail Rolex.

I like it so much that I bought one last Saturday. I'd been contemplating the watch for a short while, and on a whim called an AD in a town I was visiting and they had it in stock.
Having never seen it before in person, I of course was keen to see and handle it. The blue is.... very blue! I was concerned it would look cheap and plasticky, but I really like it. It's very different under various lighting conditions - pale blue in direct sunlight, and a darker royal blue under incandescent light. I like the blue, but think black looks better. Heck, I think green looks better - but I really like the rarity of the blue. More than the bezel and dial color I REALLY like the color of the white gold. It has a soft warm hue - almost looks like a very pale yellow gold under certain lighting conditions. At a casual glance it looks like steel (which I like - the understatement), but side-by-side there's a big difference. And the weight/heft - love it. Not-to-mention that timeless Submariner style. Best watch in the world? I'm not convinced. But I do like it - a lot. Probably the only thing I'd change on the watch (if I could design it from scratch) would be to change the polished center links to brushed. I don't like the shine very much, but it's a price I'm willing to pay for such a unique piece. (And no, I won't ask an AD to change the finish - doesn't feel quite right and would affect future resale if I go down that path). |

The way I arrived at the Smurf: I bought a bunch of different watches. A Speedmaster Professional, Ceramic No-Date Sub, Milgauss, and a GMT Master II BLNR. I learned a few things wearing these watches. For example, the No-Date Sub was by far the watch I wore the most. The glidelock bracelet made the Sub the most comfortable watch I ever owned. Setting the GMT was a bit fuzzy, which I didn't like that much. I also don't travel that much, so the GMT function wasn't that useful. Winding the Speedy from time to time was fun, but I didn't end up using the chronograph that much. I was also worries getting water into the Speedy.
Then I started looking into the precious metal models and was smitten when I saw the BLRO and the Smurf. YG watches were always too gaudy in my mind, so the white gold variants allow me to wear a nice watch which is also not seeking too much attention. I know what it is, and I like the heft of it. The Smurf ticks all of my boxes and it's a watch I will hopefully be privileged to own for the next decades. |

Sorry, I disagree. I appreciate the WG and the fact is a Sub, but man that flat blue is very unappealing. I just bought the TT blue Sub and the deep reflective sunburst dial is beautiful. It's been my grail for years.
However, to each his own. Just my opinion. Mark Sent from my SGH-I547C using Tapatalk |

hmm. I agree with a lot of your sentiments about being discreet with the white gold. However sometimes I like the yellow gold when going out in the evening. I i bought another 116618lb and plan to put it on everest rubber strap when I want to tone down the look (which won't be too often). But it's nice to have the option to not have to wear a full yellow gold bracelet. Enjoy the smurf!
