Rolex is great watchmaking, but comparing it to Geneva Seal or holy trinity watchmaking isn’t a fair fight. Machine made great products versus handcrafted art
that is possibly true but surely not what the typical aquanaut buyer cares about. it is more like wearing a PP and not a lowly rolex, even if the latter is the much better (looking) sports watch.

And you know this based upon what?

I mean, I can have an idea as to what guys who wear beads around their wrist are into, but I'd never declare it's true of the typical male bead wearer.

Interesting the 5168G has not really moved -- in fact the 5167 is about to catch up. With the same appreciation the 5168's should be pushing 100k yet they haven't moved at all.

That's again because all of the drive-up in prices, in my opinion, is due to the grey market dealers (the big players in the market) doing standard market manipulation.

It's not against any rules or laws since it's an unregulated market. :)

If things are so rare (which I know they are, because I know Patek doesn't pump out a lot of these), why do some dealers have numerous in inventory? Who's supplying them? (All rhetorical questions, because I/we know the answers here.)

This isn't what Patek had intended.

I have a 116500ln and a 5167a on rubber. I prefer the 5167a on rubber because it's so damn comfortable all seasons of the year and it flies under the radar in pure stealth mode. I am also personally having a hard time adjusting to the 116500ln without a date function makes me feel naked without it. Both watches are great and I plan on keeping both for years in my collection but if forced to choose only one I would take the 5167a. I find it fascinating to see so much hate on here for the 5167a versus the 5164a.

How times have changed.
I had a chance to get an Aquanaut about 4 or 5 yrs ago at Kirk Freeport in Grand Cayman while on a cruise vacation. We were kind of rushed and the watch didn’t really sing to me. What was worse is that my wife was shocked I was remotely interested in the watch until I told her it was a Patek. She didn’t like the look at all. The same thoughts you posted about “cheap and entry level” also influenced my thinking. In the end I think I made the right decision as the watch didn’t pull my heart strings and I’ve never sold any of my watches and never plan to so the value proposition doesn’t come into play for me. Now getting a SS Patek at retail will be a nearly impossible situation so I guess I did have my brief window. Oh well, first work problems.

I purchased a 5060 Aquanaut for $8k a few years ago. I see them over $20k now...

I think there is some heavy GM manipulation going on. The 5167 Aquanaut is a fantastic watch but it's not worth 40k.

I know people will yell at me and say "Supply & Demand bro!!" but consumer sentiment/interests don't shift this fast. To me, it's grey market manipulation.

I don't like that my watches jump in value this quick, this much. It makes it much harder to comfortably wear them knowing they're practically impossible to replace. (That's ok for limited editions, but not for "regular production" pieces that tend to get more wear out of me.)

Im hoping for the 5164R to go above $100,000. It's certainly moving towards it.

Just another badge of honour for me to own another $100,000+ watch

The pricing has nothing to do with quality or how great a watch it is. These are nothing more than trophies at this point and there so much wealth in the hands of those chasing these trophy pieces that this is the result. At some point you’d think the music has to stop but no indication so far that it will. The same buyers were running up the car market, but that has cooled considerably if not outright crashed for some brands. The difference is in the supply side, where Patek, Rolex, and AP don’t appear to have much interest in meeting demand.

I was just offered one from 2014 full set for 35k USD. Or the owner wants to trade with my Daytona 116520 plus 13k USD in cash. Haven’t decided yet.

I didn’t take it. Looking for a more substantial one with bracelet, a 5980 or 5990 perhaps.
