There was, the 4/5 digit subs. Yes it was 40mm, but the new subC with the out of proportion lugs make it appear much larger. If you make it smaller, you sacrifice some legibility, which in a dive watch is not ideal or desirable.

Not really. I tried to give my SubC to my wife instead of selling it when I got my DSSD, but she said it was too big for her. 35mm would have been perfect, but she can just get a 37mm Yachmaster instead, or find a Tudor MiniSub if she wants to match.

Might be a seller in the asian market though. I had a Speedmaster Reduced that sold like a wildfire on eBay, lots of bids from overseas for that small watch.

They could take a page from AP’s book with the 37mm Royal Oak. They sell you one of those while you wait (or don’t wait) for a 41mm.

You could get some folks to buy a smaller sub and then still buy a 40 or 43 when the list reaches their name.

Do you think there is a market for a smaller Submariner?

40mm is the perfect size. They need to go back to the older case design which was perfectly proportioned.

There’s obviously a huge market for that. There’s countless threads on here of people not liking the supercases.

Not to mention that virtually all sub-homage watches are referencing the 4/5 digit subs. Must be some market for that design.

There's a market for every size it seems. Seems like purists would be happy with a 36mm.

Maybe for the 100 year anniversary but I'd be surprised to see anything less than 40mm on the Sub.

i may also have that wrong, but i’ve always seen the YM as a less purposeful sub, with a sweet seconds hand.

i’m weird tho.
There are no SS YM and no no-date YM. So price-wise and functionality (or lack thereof)-wise, they can't act as a 1:1 replacement.

I could fathom a smaller Submariner around 38-39mm. It's in the DNA so...

For me 40mm is perfect. There’s always the BB58 if you want it a touch smaller.

Still waiting for the comeback of Mercedes hands on the Tudors, though.
Now that the brand's got an in-house movement, that'd be perfect.

Keep in mind that a smaller Submariner would entail Rolex setting up an entirely new production line. With all the talk about supply constraints and allocation of resources, Rolex would need to see incredible pent up demand for such a model before committing to such a course of action. If supply is tight now and Rolex sells everything they produce, where would they cut back? An entirely new production line is no small thing.

I’d go for a 42mm sub! But never smaller than 40

Why would Rolex reinvent the wheel when the current model is selling like hotcakes. 40 is perfect!

As someone with 7.25 in wrists, I personally think if they trim the lugs than the new Sub should come in at 41 or 42mm. I do sometimes think the maxi case and the wider lugs actually make the watch more comfortable. I understand the aesthetic of the thinner lugs, but more surface area on the lugs makes for more comfort on at least my wrist. I have a SD43 and it is simply no where near as comfortable and I have a flat wrist. The small protruding caseback is a fairly major design flaw to what would have been a near perfect watch for me personally.

I'm pretty sure that if there were a market for it, it would already exist. Rolex almost certainly puts a lot of effort into figuring places it can make money. I'd imagine that Rolex considers the 37mm YM sufficient for hitting whatever market is out there.

However, if you're looking for a nice sporty watch at 37mm and the YM isn't appealing, Panerai's new-ish 38mm range is pretty slick.

Not now but a few decades ago they did it with the Tudor Submariner.

Do not think there is a market for a smaller sub. I see so many women wearing the larger Rolex watches today. And that’s a fad that will come and go. Doubt they would go down that path.

I agree and love my 14060M! But i would buy a modern update of it with the 14060’ish proportions in a heartbeat! ZERO interest in the current chunky monkey Submariner....
