DayDate 40 - serious watch?

I am about to buy a DayDate 40 in white gold. There are purists that feel this is a show piece rather than a watchmakers watch. What are your feelings? Serious time piece or show piece?

I have PAM111, SubC, DateJust and AP Royal Oak Chrono in my collection.

Thoughts?

All Rolex watches are serious timepieces, only main difference the price, type of metal, and W/R ,so buy what you like its that simple.

I'm not sure Rolex makes a more serious watch than the DayDate. IMHO, it's the seminal Rolex and I hope to own one someday. Congrats if you end up pulling the trigger on an amazing watch!

"Watchmakers' watch" might be a stretch..
It's a solid, dependable movement wrapped in a very expensive, albeit nice, precious metal case. Some might argue that you'd want to look for a more elaborate complication for similar money...depend if you're buying new or pre owned too...

thanks for your opinion. i have looked at the nautilus and other Pateks and they don't wow me for some reason. i've tried to get into them. I have the only AP want as well. not looking for a strap watch or i would have a plethora of choices. think that a strap may be the next one in a few years. like that this is comfy, dressy and sporty. but agree for the $ there are prob many better complications on the market.

Day Date WG is a highly respected watch. Not a show piece to me unless you go YG or RG. Most people will think it's stainless which is perfect!

I'd say the fact its WG makes it LESS of a "show piece" Most people will think its Stainless Steel.

What in the heck is a watchmakers watch? And, who would care what a watch “maker” thinks? Rolex watches are for watch “wearers” and watch “lovers”.

Every Rolex is incredibly well designed, engineered and constructed. They only use the best materials. They are built to last. No, they are not hand decorated by artisans, but they are the best watch a machine can build, and IMO sold below their true value, as indicated by the secondary market.

So, buy the watch that “sings to you” and love it!

The DD does a better job of hiding scratches than just about any other Rolex. The links are narrow and the lack of a polished clasp make it very difficult to see any blemishes.

What does it offer over DJ? Just the bracelet. I don’t get why this one is held in such regard. You can buy one from Tudor, others.

Yup, DD for me too. It's gonna be my next purchase as I have lost my patience in the waiting list for SS professional models.

The true "watchmaker's watch" as a WIS would define are the likes of Phillipe Dufour, Laurent Ferrier and Jaeger - LeCoultre.

It is not an exaggeration to say that JLC's technical prowess enabled many Iconic brands and models like Cartier Tank, Audemars and Patek to succeed.

JLC we're once supplying the parts of those high-end watches.

The Day Date 40 in WG is less showy than in YG or RG, if that’s where your headed

A beautiful time piece? Yes. A show piece? No. It's a great watch, wear it.

Sorry, but if you know anything and I mean anything about watches- you wouldn't ask this question. In doing so, you actually come across as a troll.

I have never, ever heard this. Please quote or reference these "purists".

The Day Date is still the most iconic symbol of Rolex as a brand.

The WG DD40 is one of the classiest watches Rolex makes. I certainly wouldn't consider it a showy piece. It's tough as nails but has a solid elegant appeal which dresses up and down very well. I'd highly recommend it to anyone looking for a good Rolex.
