15400 Black or ruthemium?

Hi folks,

Been waiting for a blue 15400 but my AD can only provide me with 15400 Black dial or ruthenium dial.
This is the last batch of 15400 before they move into 15500.

Beside the appealing fact to acquire a discontinued model, I have concerns on dial color.

Any insight from you as which of both colors would be the most special?

I know it comes to taste and I still have to see both in real to have a clear opinion.

Thank you!

I would do black (I actually was in the same boat) and had a choice of white, black or ‘grey’. I polled people and black won.

Either are great. I’d give the ruthenium a slight edge

Ruthenium all the way for me, black is very boring and one dimensional

I had the black one, but it just didn't do it for me. I never did wear it out and sold it earlier this week. At the end of the day you got to pick what you love. Buy what speaks to you. Best of luck!

Black is more legible, however, ruthemium 15400 had a very short run, so I'd go with that.

If you are looking for "special" it would be Ruthenium as it's the shortest run color. Black on the other hand is also very beautiful and actually a little easier to read. I do own a Ruthenium so I'm a bit biased, but if your AD is offering you one I would totally go for it since it's a rare opportunity to grab not only one of the last 15400s but the rarest dial that was produced.

I was 100% sure that I wanted to get a black dial till I saw the ruthenium dial. I am definitely voting for ruthenium

I have the black. But I’m a massive sucker for black dials. I feel they are the most versatile and will always stand the test of time.

I agree. I think AP did a great job with the Ruthenium on this model. It really makes the watch special.

If you can't get blue, I'd definitely go with ruthenium!

AP grey is really nice - be it ruthenium, anthracite etc.

Thank you!

It should really come down 100% to your own taste. Lots of people here love the Ruthenium. But when I was shopping for my AP last year, I looked at all the 15400 dial options. For me, Ruthenium came in a distant fourth.

As far as most “special”, the Ruthenium is very likely the least produced 15400. But I can’t imagine that being a deciding factor for purchase, unless I was absolutely 50/50 on my preference between Black and Ruthenium.

15400 Black or ruthemium?

I had the choice between the 2 and chose black for 1 main reason - it has high contrast with the markers, hands and writing on the dial.

Much love for the Ruthenium dial, but I find it a little flush and sort of washed out and not as legible as the black or blue!

Here’s my black!

Would vote black, just for the contrast as dial stands out more nicely, tried ruthenium but it was too washed out as someone mentioned...

As for the least color model not sure if this should be basis for decision you should buy what you like. AP is relatively rare in the wild anyway and the amount of new colors and variations AP is putting on the market not sure if it become something special in future especially if 15500 gets also rhutenium dial at some point...

Put them side by side and let your instinct/heart guide you!:)

I’ve only seen the black in person, it was my favourite of the blue, silver and black options prior to Ru version coming out.

I was offered a Ruthenium about 6 months ago during my wait for the blue. I am kicking myself in the rear-end for for not taking it now. I personally like it more than the black and I am completely ignoring the "collectible" factor that potentially comes with it.

I would say that the Ruthenium has more than just an edge, more like a 2-1 edge. Anyway, black dial for me. The Ruthenium dial is too washed out and not enough contrast. Good luck on your decision. It’s a fun decision to have to make!

I find the idea of rare or short runs gets muddled with WIS as nicer or better. Forget about all that stuff and get the dial that sings to you!

Ruthenium for me. In fact, my next purchase will most likely be the Ruthenium 15500. I had a few opportunities to purchase the 15400 in the last couple years, but wasn't ready to pull the trigger.
