Long time admirer... Thinking about a PAM 312

Hi All.

Long time Panerai admirer. Thinking of taking the plunge on picking up a nice pre owned PAM 312. Seems like a good one based on what I have read in this forum.

Anything I should keep in mind as far as any issues with this model?
Thoughts on pricing?

312 was my first PAM and I wore it non-stop for 5 years, so only have good things to say about it. As for pricing, check the usual suspects: Watchfinder, DavidSW etc.

312 is a great choice and one of the best looking modern Panerai models out there. My only issue with the watch is its thickness and how top heavy it is. I never found it comfortable. After owning/borrowing a 372, 233, 112, 911, 422 (borrowed), 616 (borrowed), etc I found the 312 to be in last place for comfort.

312 was my first Panerai and I loved it. Eventually sold it to fund other stuff but It's one that Id likely buy again. I think it's a great, functional watch with the seconds and date. Good luck and happy hunting!

I had a lot of love for the 312 and also found that it was rather top heavy. I finally ended up getting the 1312. Slightly thinner and lighter case and lugs. Ecru lume and blue second hands make it just that different from your classic PAMs...

This is helpful folks, thanks! Thoughts on if it is missing the outer brown cardboard box? I know this is something that is preferable to have with Panerai. The one I am looking at the greyish black cardboard box and the tan wood box that contains the watch. Thanks!

You would want to look for one that includes the barcode stickers with all the pertinent numerical information of the watch. You can do without the cardboard box if you have that.

312 has the thicker 9000 movement, the new model 1312 has the 9010 movement which is a bit thinner and has some added movement functions. The 9000 movement has single post balance bridge, the 9010 has a double post balance bridge .. just nicety features on the newer movement, to keep up with the "Jones" (other top brand movements)

Both the 312 and the 1312 are 44mm wide cases .. the 372 and such Luminor with the 3 day manual wind movements are wider 47mm cases (some are 45mm)

The 1312 will have a more vintage looking lume and the little secs hand will be blue.

Both 312 and 1312 should have a low profile and fit decently on a 6.50 to 7" wrist

You can probably find a 312 cheaper than the 1312 .. just because the 1312 is newer and some folk like that little blue secs hand

I think the price difference between 312 and 1312 isn’t that much,I spoke to two of the dealers I frequent in Japan earlier this year,both said more people are looking for 312 as it’s more classic and easier to mix and match with different straps

i think the 312 is indeed a bit thicker than the 1312.

Lots of good advice on this thread, especially regarding the comparison between 312 and 1312. The other thing to think about is that 1312 has “automatic” on the dial while 312 doesn’t.

Since this is your first PAM and there are some complaints about the weight of a 312 (I had a 328 and didn’t find it top heavy at all), you should also consider a 351/352/1351.

The 351 is just like the 312 except gold hand, tobacco brown dial, and TI case. It is a much lighter watch. 352 is a 351 with TI bracelet, which is a nice touch.

The 1351 is even slimmer and lighter than the 351 but has “automatic” on the dial. I would check these models out before making a decision.

Also, the price point is slightly higher withbthe TI models.

The P9000 movement is 7.9mm thick vs the P9010 at 6mm. So the case between the 312 and 1312 will be maybe 2mmm thickness difference? The other dimensions of the case are standard ... it's commonly known as a 44mm Luminor sized case, however these new automatics has a slight slope to the case and the lugs to wrap the wrist.

The new P9010 has some nice added features to the movement ... not sure they will rock you boat ... they are really earth shattering, IMHO ... especially if you can save a good deal between a 312 and a 1312? That left over funds you can apply to getting more straps!!

That's where all my money goes ... new shoes for my PAMs!

If you have 6 to 7 wrist .. this family of panerai automatics are a nice fit and comfortable to wear ... the choice then is yours which model/dial variation

I bought my Pam 312 about 3years, no issue whatsoever. It is not the best watch in my collection but I give it a lot of wrist time.
