Since you already have an sd43, I’d say you don’t need a DSSD. However, if you do want a watch with a neat on-wrist adjustment system (forgot the technical name), great wrist presence (sometimes too great) and bragging rights saying your watch can go deeper under water than most, if not all, commercially available diving watches then yes, get it. I love mine!

If you want to stay one step ahead of the ladies now wearing 40mm then get this.

I have the sd43 and DSSD all black and it’s torture trying to figure out which to wear each day. I can’t sell either. Both are incredible watches. Don’t do it to yourself!!

I went d-blue and SD43 myself. It as redundant. If you don’t love the blue then go for it. But the blue is nice. :). Markup on either isn’t too bad right now.

Not a wrong choice here. DSSD black or blue or enjoy the SD. It’s all good.

Bite the bullet and get the DSb now. If you ever want to sell it down the road you'll get the moment back. The black no one wants ! resale stinks.

I think the DSSD in black is the best value in the whole diver line-up. All of the crazy, wildly over-engineered tech Rolex could bring to a mechanical dive watch, without the crazy markups and waitlist bs. Love it. I think you need it

Agree, it baffles me. Logic would tell me that it should be the most desirable piece they make, but the sheep of the watch world like to say it’s too big, when many of them were wearing 50mm Invictas 5 years ago. This watch has a reason for being large, and it is amazing!

I personally would not own both, just too similar. I prefer variety, especially in a small collection like I have. Both great watches - pick the one you like better and lose the other and buy something different would be my suggestion

I own the SD43 and have previously owned the DSSD Black and the JC version. All are great watches and stand on their own for quality and wear. With that said, I wanted to be in other places with my money and collection so I chose the SD43. At one point in my collecting I owned the YG, WG, Hulk and ND Submariners and the DSSD and rotated between them. I thought it was fun but moved on after a while. Buy what you want and will wear. In the end this hobby is about enjoyment. Good luck and keep us posted.

I think you are approaching it wrong and might end up with buyers remorse.
Going for a cheaper option will usually end up flipping the one you initially bought and find the one you wanted it in the first place.

If you really prefer the Deepblue than wait for it or go for a pre-loved one.

The DSSD has so many features that you can't compare it with any other. Domed Crystal and the ingenuity of the clasp for example.
Great reference.

(Personally a big fan of the black)

My AD has one in stock if you wanted to purchase at retail. Gunderson's Jewelers in Omaha, NE (402) 935-6332

I tried it on recently but it was just too big for me. But then that got me thinking about a Sea Dweller and low and behold a 116600 was delivered to my doorstep a few days later. If I can justify that and a 5 digit no-date sub you can certainly add the black dial DSSD to the SD43!!

I’ll probably get a SD43 after I list and sell my JC DSSD. As has been said here, it’s an amazing watch, and the clasp and dial are without an equal.

Thx ya'll for the input. What's your best guess of where I would end up If i were looking to trade my 1 month old SD43 for a DSSD JC? Out of pocket wise.....ballpark. I would only want the 126660, not the 116660.

I personally think you would land close to even, with maybe a few hundred either way.

DSSD JC sells for $1,500 more gray than the SD43. I think you’d be looking at at least $1,000 on top of the SD.

I have the Black DSSD.

I never get tired of staring at it. I know the D-Blue version gets a lot of love, but my preference has always been for the classic Rolex Diver look offered by the Black.

Additionally, one aspect of what makes both versions of the watch so visually appealing is the domed crystal....it is stunning in the light on both versions, and this is something that is unique to the DSSD.

There is no argument that the JC version is not a bit prettier, but there will always be those of us who prefer the Black, for many different reasons.

Do I need the Deep Sea Black?

You probably don't even need a watch. You certainly don't need a Rolex, and you absolutely dont need another Rolex that is virtually identical to the one you already have. But do you want one for some reason, and are you willing to shell out another ridiculous sum of $$ to have one?

Black or Blue, both are cool. I'd def try and see the Blue in person before making a final decision. One really interesting thing about the Blue is that its tone changes dramatically based on lighting.

Also, some seem to think that Rolex named the watch after JC, which is false...it commemorates his exploration They don't name watches... the community does. It's similar to the Paul Newman (or Panda) Daytona. That said, at least these are real people who actually accomplished something, which far cooler than Batman, Hulk, Smurf, etc.

Too "similar" to what?
What is the "big boy"? Both, the black & D-Blue are the same size.

Actually saw a black faced Deep Sea in the display case at a local AD here in Toronto. So if you can get one with a AD, definitely go that route.

I personally think that would be a ridiculous purchase. If you want to go down this route, at least get the D-Blue dial for some variety.

The SD43 is simply a better proportioned and wearable watch to the Deepsea. I see no purpose in the black Deepsea now that the SD43 is an option. Sales seem to support this as well. They sell for under retail on the grey market now and I saw one on display at my AD, one that I almost never see a single sports model in anymore.
