Selvedge just means the end of a roll.

Unsanforized denim isn’t shrink resistant and will shrink after a washing.

Good retailers will publish measurements before and after one wash.

Look here for some good Japanese stuff.

Tried numerous different brands, all more expensive than the LEVI slim fit I keep on going back to. They have the best all round performance and durability. Only thing I dislike is how they will lose their black colour after half a dozen washes but I don’t over wash jeans anyway. Denim is designed to be worn a lot.

Favorite jeans?

I used to like no stretch jeans. Then realized they don’t last as long as old school no stretch jeans. They warp, shrink, or come apart after several washes, even after following instructions. Then I realized that no one really makes no stretch jeans anymore that are reasonably priced.

I humbly would suggest you check the quality and how much stretch to cotton is contained in the denim. 2% stretch material is a good standard, and durable denim is now including a percentage of polyester which adds durability. Good quality denim won't exhibit what you described. Nudies, Naked and Famous or even my Diesel jeans have never warped or shrank, unless they were raw denim, then those will change when washed but if you're a jean head, then you know that requires special treatment.

Denim shouldn't just be washed and dried repeatedly, ruins it. If you want to wash and dry denim like gym towels then you're better off buying cheapo jeans.
Levis are still great but I just don't like their fit or cut, but if you want basic 100% cotton straight leg denim in standard washes, they are still hard to beat. Any good denim today is going to cost $150 plus for a good denim twill. On average most cost about $200, but I buy 80% of my denim in europe for better prices and tax free. Nordstrom has some great deals on last season denim, which when it comes to denim I don't care about seasons, denim is denim.

What are your favs?
Same build as you, just a few years younger at 52

I’ve worn Diesel jeans for years and absolutely love how they feel and fit.

They are more low rise than most, but not in a bad way. They sort of ride on the hip. Additionally, they offer a wide variety of denims in different washes and what I really like is that quite a few have some Lycra in the fabric for added stretch and comfort (especially important if you like skinny fit).

Many are still made in Italy if that’s at all important to you.

Favorite jeans?

I have a few pairs from Allsaints that I like.

I have some high end stuff from Japan. I agree that some denim just shouldn’t be washed. This stuff is in that category, especially if it’s raw.

Recently though I’ve been buying from Uniqlo (very low end Japan). They’re stretch, they’re cheap, they’re durable, and they hem them for free.

Wrangler.
$15 from Walmart. Crotch has more room than Levi's, don't wear then tear like Levi's and they wear better. This is especially important if you straddle a motorcycle.

Fit is the most important characteristic to me, not country of origin, type of denim, etc. I like medium rise or regular rise.

My main jeans are for ever the classic 501. I'm all for selvedge and was hunting them for years. As a kid, used ones, worn and washed, and before selvedge became a huge thing, I went for every opportunity when Levis offered them. And these are holding up very well. And I actually wear white 501 on occasion to, throwback/make it fashionable again kinda move...

Well... Japanese denim -can- be insanely great textile. The good stuff is valued for its uneven weave from the loom, its weight, and the real indigo dye vs chemical dyes used for most other denim fabric. The depth and richness of hues as it fades is visually unequaled by other processes. It’s also more fade resistant.

Best-fitting cheap skinny jeans: Zara.

Best-fitting designer skinny jeans: Balmain.

Thanks for the advice Rashid I have 2 older Diesel jeans that are my favorite but no longer fit me because I cut down my waist size from 33 to 30. Maybe I ought to look into getting diesel again instead of Levi’s. You are absolutely right about not washing denim too often. I think you may be on to something about the quality of the jeans that I am buying to be sub par in quality.

I just ordered a pair of Zara skinny's. Balmain only came in distressed, which are too young for me.

Zara jeans are usually Made in Portugal or Turkey. They're better-quality than those Made in China or Vietnam.

(And Zara jeans often "borrow" the designs of Balmain or Saint Laurent jeans. )
