Officer Down, Cortex PD Colorado
Sergeant Michael Moran was shot and killed yesterday while making a traffic stop near the intersection of South Broadway and San Juan Drive at about 11:25 am.
An occupant of the car shot Sergeant Moran before the vehicle fled in the vehicles. Other officers located the two suspects approximately 1-1/2 miles south of the original shooting. One subject was shot and killed after opening fire on officers. A second subject was taken into custody. Sergeant Moran was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran and had served with the Cortez Police Department for 11 years. He is survived by his two daughters. Godspeed my brother, may you Rest In Peace.

I'm in Cortez often. It's near Four Corners (NM/AZ/CO/UT borders). Quite a bit of poverty, but also mixed in with outdoorsy types as well as Ute and Navajo native Americans. It's a generally safe, small-ish town.
But, it's also a common route for drugs coming in from Mexico (so I'm told). They have had a big uptick in violence in the past few years. Very sorry to hear about this murder. Some good, down to earth people in Cortez. https://www.city-data.com/crime/crim...-Colorado.html |

I lived down there and handled a lot of criminal cases in my years running a law practice. I can tell you that the community is beset by high alcoholism and heavy meth use. Great people but many living under very difficult circumstances.
Years ago there was a tragic mass police shooting done by three local boys who wanted to go full survivalist.
