Has Rolex ever made applied "ROLEX" font on dial?
I saw an interesting 1500 vintage on my IG feed today. The thing that stood out was how the "ROLEX" font below the crown at 12 is not printed but sort of applied and has no serif at all.
I compared it to other 1500's on Instagram only found 2 other examples of such blocky font: an old Air King and another 1500. In my short watch collecting/ogling journey I've never seen such dial. |

I found a similar watch/dial setup on eBay: Listing
The one I saw is very clean compared to the damaged..er..tropical dial on the eBay listing but has similar configuration. Further research shows me that these kinds of dials are used in the "Ovettone" setup in 6xxx's. Examples: Alex Pig's listing 1954 6305 Bulang's 6352 |

Not uncommon for that period. For examples, do a google search of images for “rolex oyster perpetual 1955” and you’ll see a lot.

Thanks. I think I've figured out the answer too. The early 1500s made in 1960 seem to use these dials too. Perhaps it is a transition from the bubblebacks?

Yes it could be. The 6518 is considered “transitional” or a “semi-bubbleback”. As with all things Rolex-vintage there seem to be exceptions and outliers to everything “generally accepted”.

Beautiful watch. Wish I could find one like yours. I have vintage 6426 too which I love very much but still prefer the roulette date and applied Rolex on the dial. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Oh lovely watch! With the rare “-Date-“ and period correct bracelet too. Very nice and deserves to be worn more. Had my 6518 serviced last year and gets worn regularly. Sent from my cracked, broken hand wound phone. IG @morning_tundra |
